New GWM P Series bakkie to be offered in two double-cab styles in SA

The new GWM P Series bakkie range is set to launch in South Africa early in December 2020 and we’ve discovered that two distinct styles of the double-cab body shape are set to be offered.

The Chinese firm’s local arm earlier confirmed the fresh-faced line-up would comprise as many as 16 derivatives at launch, ranging from a single-cab base variant in 4x2 guise with a manual gearbox to a double-cab 4x4 model.

Our latest information suggests there will be four single-cab variants, covering two specification levels and offered in either 4x2 or 4x4 guise. From what we understand, all variants across the range will feature GWM’s 2,0-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, delivering 120 kW and 400 N.m.

Perhaps more interestingly, however, we now know there will be as many as eight "commercial-spec" double-cab derivatives, offered in 4x2 or 4x4 form with either a manual or an automatic transmission.

Furthermore, we’ve learned the local range will be topped by four "passenger-spec" double-cab derivatives, with the choice of 4x2 or 4x4 configurations as well as two trim levels. Each of the four, however, will ship standard with an eight-speed automatic cog-swapper from ZF.

Another zero-star bakkie? Global NCAP crash tests three SA-spec models

Global NCAP and the Automobile Association of South Africa have released the results of their fourth round of crash testing, this time rating SA-spec versions of the GWM Steed 5, Renault Kwid and Haval H1 for safety.

According to the safety authority, all three vehicles provided “poor levels of adult and child protection” in the standard 64 km/h frontal offset crash test, resulting in “serious cause for concern”. The Steed 5 bakkie failed to score a star for adult occupant safety, with Global NCAP saying it “demonstrated a high probability of life-threatening injury” in the crash.

GWM Steed 5: zero stars

Haval H1: two stars

Prices! New GWM P-Series bakkie range finally arrives in South Africa

The new GWM P-Series bakkie has finally arrived in South Africa, with the local range kicking off at R339 900 and running through to R544 900.

All variants feature the Chinese brand’s 2,0-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, which delivers peak outputs of 120 kW and 400 N.m. While GWM earlier indicated the range would feature 16 derivatives, there appear to be only 12 at launch.

So, from what we understand, the fresh-faced line-up includes four single-cab commercial variants, covering two specification levels (SX and DLX) and offered in either 4x2 or 4x4 guise, with a six-speed manual gearbox the only available transmission.

There are also four commercial-spec double-cab derivatives, available in 4x2 or 4x4 form with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. Specification levels are likewise limited to SX and DLX.

Missing creature comforts not needed for a work bakkie..
Understable if it's just creature comforts because it would be wrong if they are planning to strip safety features in a car that still carries 4 passengers and call it a commercial vehicle.

The autotrader article I linked had some details on that.. their test unit was the commercial model and still had 6 airbags on the safety front.. was missing adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist but, still had a reverse cam and keyless entry.. still amazingly spec'd for a so called commercial model, when you think about what you get on something like an Isuzu fleetline bakkie..

I am conflicted, the chrome grille is overwhelming and the Lexus one underwhelming, an aftermarket grille wouldn't be a bad idea.

New GWM P-Series bakkie in SA: full details (including prices) released

The new GWM P-Series bakkie has officially touched down in South Africa, with the Chinese firm’s local arm releasing specification and pricing details.

As we pointed out in an earlier story, the range includes single- and double-cab variants, running from R339 900 through to R544 900 (check out full pricing at the bottom of this story). All 16 variants feature the brand’s 2,0-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, which delivers peak outputs of 120 kW and 400 N.m. Unfortunately, GWM has yet to release proper images of each model's cabin.

Single-cab models

The fresh-faced line-up kicks off with four single-cab commercial variants, covering two specification levels (SX and DLX) and offered in either 4x2 or 4x4 guise, with a six-speed manual gearbox the only available transmission.

All single-cab derivatives ship standard with 17-inch alloys, electronic stability control, traction control, hill-start assist, dual front airbags, cruise control, a multifunctional steering wheel, two USB ports, rear parking sensors, electric windows and manual air-conditioning.

The DLX trim level adds items such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel, partial-leather seat trim, a six-way power adjustable driver’s seat, hill-descent control, tyre-pressure monitoring, a reversing camera, side airbags, a nine-inch touchscreen system (with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality), automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, front foglamps and automatic air-conditioning.

Commercial double-cab models

There are also eight commercial-spec double-cab derivatives, available in 4x2 or 4x4 form with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. Specification levels are likewise limited to SX and DLX, and thus trim levels mirror those of the single-cab derivatives outlined above.

Passenger double-cab models

The line-up is topped by four passenger-spec double-cab derivatives, again with the choice of 4x2 or 4x4 configurations as well as two trim levels (this time LS and LT). Each of the four, however, ships standard with ZF's eight-speed automatic cog-swapper. The passenger-spec double-cab derivatives feature distinctly different exterior design cues to those of the commercial versions, gaining items such as a model-specific grille, front bumper, headlamps and wheels.

Pricing:

DRIVEN: GWM P-Series DC 2,0TD LT 4x4 8AT

GWM has taken a leap into a far more demanding sector of the South African bakkie market with the launch of its new 16-strong P-Series range. Does this Chinese bakkie have what it takes to trouble the big players? CAR magazine contributor Stuart Johnston finds out...

The new GWM P-Series is slightly longer, substantially wider and a bit taller than the previous GWM range-topper, the Steed 6. And it has a bold new face designed to make the brand instantly recognisable on our roads.

Actually, make that two faces. The Chinese firm's newest bakkie is offered locally in two model lines, which GWM calls the “Commercial” and “Passenger” versions. The Commercial versions feature what I'd describe as a rather tasteful black grille, while the Passenger models come with a far more "in-your-face" chrome grille. Both models boast distinctive new headlamp clusters, which GWM refers to as having a “panther eye” design.

The P-Series is all new, underpinned by a fresh ladder-frame chassis constructed of high-strength steel. The body, says GWM, also features high-quality steel, as well as crash-protection beams in the doors and in the passenger compartment bulkhead. The company says its new pick-up is far more torsionally rigid than the Steed 5 and Steed 6 models that have been available here for some time.
