New Haval Jolion Coming to SA

Chinese SUV manufacturer, Haval, is expected to reveal a new compact SUV that will eventually replace the current H2 in the firm’s lineup. The new Haval Jolion is coming to SA!

Haval has taken significant strides since arriving on local soil back in 2017. The H2 compact family car was one of the first Haval models to go on sale locally (alongside the H1) and was followed by the H6, H6C and flagship H9 SUV. Considering how popular SUVs are right now, Haval has managed to attract widespread support locally by offering models that are generously equipped with features and nicely-priced against rivaling products which has played a major role in the brand’s success in South Africa.

The H2 has been a particularly popular model for Haval and a facelifted H2 arrived early in 2020.

The latest news from Haval is that a new Haval Jolion compact SUV is expected to be fully revealed soon. The good news is that the new Jolion will be arriving in South Africa within in the next 2 months. Initially, the Jolion will slot in just above the current H2 until the current H2 model is slowly phased out of the market.

As far as engine power is concerned, the Jolion will make use of a 1.5-litre turbopetrol engine and while local outputs have yet to be confirmed, power outputs of between 105 kW and 116 kW are expected. However, unlike the current H2, the Jolion will make use of a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and a 5-speed manual transmission is also likely.

GWM P-Series LT 4x4 automatic (2021) Review

Fast Facts

Model tested: GWM P-Series LT 4x4 automatic
Price: R544 900 (as of March 2021)
Engine: 2.0-litre turbodiesel
Power/Torque: 120 kW/400 Nm
Transmission: 8-speed automatic
Fuel economy: 9.4 L/100 km (claimed)
Tow rating: 3 750 kg (braked trailer)

How much does the GWM P-Series Cost in South Africa?

Pricing for the GWM P-Series starts from R339 900, but the top-specification P-Series LT 4x4 automatic is priced from R544 900 (as of March 2021). A 5-year/100 000 km warranty and a 5-year/100 000 km service plan are standard.

Verdict

Our maiden test of the GWM P-Series double cab was illuminating. In many ways, the P-Series is the first, proper example of the direction that the leisure-double cab segment is headed and it’s telling that this direction is coming from the east, driven by a Chinese brand that’s perhaps underperformed given all the value its bakkies offer.

The cabin of this P-Series LT derivative is not only luxurious and SUV-like, but generously equipped with features that are typically found on more expensive cars, let alone double cabs. More importantly, there is no leisure double cab at this price that offers this much value. Indeed, GWM's newcomer will be hugely attractive to buyers who favour value-for-money over (often blind) brand allegiance.

The P-Series needs to prove its long-term reliability; GWM will have to work hard to convince fiercely-loyal bakkie enthusiasts to switch to a P-Series. The fact that the LT comes with a 5-year/100 000 km warranty and -service plan is an indication that the Chinese brand believes in its product. Given sister brand Haval's progress in our market, that peace-of-mind after-sales back-up could be the clincher.
