GWM P-Series LT 4x4 automatic (2021) Review

Fast Facts

Model tested: GWM P-Series LT 4x4 automatic
Price: R544 900 (as of March 2021)
Engine: 2.0-litre turbodiesel
Power/Torque: 120 kW/400 Nm
Transmission: 8-speed automatic
Fuel economy: 9.4 L/100 km (claimed)
Tow rating: 3 750 kg (braked trailer)

How much does the GWM P-Series Cost in South Africa?

Pricing for the GWM P-Series starts from R339 900, but the top-specification P-Series LT 4x4 automatic is priced from R544 900 (as of March 2021). A 5-year/100 000 km warranty and a 5-year/100 000 km service plan are standard.

Verdict

Our maiden test of the GWM P-Series double cab was illuminating. In many ways, the P-Series is the first, proper example of the direction that the leisure-double cab segment is headed and it’s telling that this direction is coming from the east, driven by a Chinese brand that’s perhaps underperformed given all the value its bakkies offer.

The cabin of this P-Series LT derivative is not only luxurious and SUV-like, but generously equipped with features that are typically found on more expensive cars, let alone double cabs. More importantly, there is no leisure double cab at this price that offers this much value. Indeed, GWM's newcomer will be hugely attractive to buyers who favour value-for-money over (often blind) brand allegiance.

The P-Series needs to prove its long-term reliability; GWM will have to work hard to convince fiercely-loyal bakkie enthusiasts to switch to a P-Series. The fact that the LT comes with a 5-year/100 000 km warranty and -service plan is an indication that the Chinese brand believes in its product. Given sister brand Haval's progress in our market, that peace-of-mind after-sales back-up could be the clincher.

Where were those pics near the sea taken?
Looks like a nice little spot.

The grill emblem is so ugly, ruins the look, otherwise an interesting option.

GWM working on extreme Raptor-fighting P-Series bakkie – report

GWM is reportedly working on a more extreme version of the P-Series double-cab bakkie to take the fight to the likes of the Ford Ranger Raptor.

According to CarsGuide.com.au, the Chinese firm is developing a new range-topping variant that will likely boast improved off-road ability, more aggressive exterior styling and fresh technologies.

The publication suggests the “Black Bullet” concept revealed in 2020 effectively serves as a preview of the upcoming model, though points out the production version is unlikely to be quite as extreme. It’s furthermore not clear whether an increase in power (either via engine tuning or a fresh powerplant altogether) is on the cards.

Steve Maciver, GWM Australia’s head of marketing and communications, told CarsGuide.com.au the automaker was aware of increasing demand for more hardcore, flagship versions of popular bakkies.

“There might be opportunities. It’s going to have to come down to the right product,” he said.

I saw one of these new P-series bakkies this week for the first time on the road. It has a "presence". It seems bigger than the bakkies around it, but I'm not sure if I'm a huge fan. I just dunno.

Afaik dimensionally-wise it is bigger than all of them as well. Cant argue with that value proposition when taking into acc that spec level!

That'll explain it. I saw it looked bigger, but sometimes styling can create that perception as well.

We bought the lux (manual) version of the H2 at the end of November last year. In December of the same year we drove from Cape Town to Bethlehem and back to visit family. Fuel consumption was ok at 8L/100km for a brand new vehicle and that was doing 120-130km/h where ever possible. It was an awesome drive and thus far we are very happy with the H2. Fuel consumption while in the city is not the best and pretty close to the manufactures figures but we accounted for that when we worked out the budget for the H2. We have a smaller car we use for most of our city travel but it is really nice to use the H2 for the longer journeys outside of the city or a lazy cruise to the ocean.

Hi, I was looking at the Haval H1 & thought it seemed cool.

I eventually went down a rabbit hole on YouTube.

A South African guy has posted videos about the issues with his H6c.Apparently it has electronic issues, there is a breaking problem, turbo lag, gearbox problems & he has complained about bad dealer support.

He says apparently complaints are deleted from the Facebook haval group and people removed

The sales experience was not the greatest but I have had worse. After returning from our journey to the Free State I had to get a scuff plate at the back of the H2 replaced that was damaged and asked them to do a software update while at the dealership as it is something I have asked for on all my previous cars. After sales have been excellent thus far.

I have had none of the electrical issues highlighted above. Shifting to second gear can be a bit rough but once the car is warmed up the experience is a lot better.

The one thing I had to get use to is the protection built into the engine when it is still cold. Do not attempt to drive up a steep hill until the car is warmed up. It will not give you full power until that time.
