I worked for a photocopier company in the eighties and Umtata had many many customers of ours. Used to sleep over and work our asses off.

That place was always a POS. Always full of litter and dirty. I never visited after 1994 but I'm sure it never became any cleaner or better run.
When i was a youngster there, it was a lovely town, but that was the late sixties, early seventies.

Not at all, but I've had five face to face robberies excluding petty crimes. I was lucky to not get injured or killed but I also never fight back.

. Being a coward and not fighting back is why the criminals are getting away with murder. No consequences for their actions

The whole country is a crime riddled mess, just some areas are worse than others.

Yeah, it depends on how much money you have at the end of the day.

Generally, it is as follows.

Poor areas- Very bad
Lower middle class- bad
Upper Middle class- Okayish with a major crime now and then
Upper-upper middle class and rich- Generally safe to very safe. Oscar was an idiot if he really thought he was being robbed in that place he stayed.

Yes two blacks tried to rob me looking for a phone. Police wanted me to press charges for God knows what reason.

Feck alone knows, every time I have recently reported some thing, they did not want to open a case to keep their stats down. Never mind, that twice the person's attending the complaint, where unable to read or write. Which is useful.

Maybe the guy who tried to shake you down, was behind on his protection fees.

They came down the road whist the guy had a knife out.
So you refused to lay a charge of assault so the police could do nothing? It's weird that the police can witness a crime but can't do anything about it unless someone lays a charge.

fcker stole my gate motor about a month ago.

Touch wood - not lost a gate motor yet. It is in a anti-theft bracket, with a heavy steel anti-tamper case. Real pain to open it up for maintenance.
R10k replacement. Have CCTV footage. cops, not interested. opened case for insurance. received SMSs on the same day with case number and then one a few hours later telling me the case has been closed. didnt even bother to ask for CCTV footage. So what I do know is that a R10k loss is below the threshold for the cops to give a fck.

About how it works, these days, open, and shut, nothing to be done, so they can do as little as possible.

Strangely, the police officer who took my statement at the station, knew it was a black male that stole the motor without me having to mention it.
