And how if they die you can't get the data off of it as the controller is soldered onto the motherboard. SSD fails, throw the Macbook away. That's a thing.

Sure...but yet it's not a thing that actually happens 4+ years later.

A brief Internet lookup says around R12500 for a new screen on an M3 pro. Don't know if thats exact costs etc and obviously if still under Warranty you'de need it done at a certified apple repair center.

If the iStore Careplan was taken or Digicape's extended warranty then they do cover one screen replacement I believe.

Yea look, I'll rather just live with it than fork out repair money now.

Yeah, most of the time it's just the motherboard that fails before that, so you lose everything before the SSD wear-out anyways, so lose the data that way.

Well this weekend I managed to liquid damage by M3 Pro screen by spilling whiskey on it, FML.

It's not a worst case scenario because everything still works and it's only on the bottom right corner...but it still sucks obviously

Keep us posted what it will cost to repair. No warranty cover? (Dell Pro includes Liquid damage, can claim once a year)

And besides if that's your strategy for data retention then you have far bigger issues.

But in four years with over a thousand of these deployed I'm yet to even see a motherboard failure (that happened from natural causes) and not a single SSD failure and I have on particular test machine that has been absolutely hammered with rewrites constantly which is still going hard and strong.

While I love Louis' insight and detail going into these things he is by and large alarmist.

Yes 2011 Macbook Air ink covered 50% of my screen

Spilled red wine on mine and flushed it immediately with my alcohol/water screen cleaner. There was a huge smudge inside the screen where the solution must have wicked in but it eventually [mostly] disappeared.

I don't have a before but this is where it is now.

This is the screen I replaced 6 months ago

Glad I'm not the only one at least, yea the white patches have already started disappearing...but this purple patch I'm not sure about.

Further up the screen there is also a very suspicious looking line, but it's hardly noticeable unless you look at it from an angle:

Well well well, woke up this morning and the big purple blob is gone:

There is still some indication of a 'smudge' and I don't think it will ever recover 100%, but definitely no need for an expensive repair now
