Have you rooted your HTC Desire S?

Hey guys,

I got my HTC Desire S last year from Vodacom. I now have a reason I need to root. I want to set the proxy of the entire device, so that I can use all my apps with the University's WiFi. At the moment I can only browse on the WiFi network. The reason for the restriction is that the WiFi network requires a certain username and password as well as a proxy.

Have you rooted your HTC Desire S? How did you do it? I just don't want to dive in and brick device.

Thanks.

I'm getting my Desire S next week, and I'm considering rooting my device eventually, but I've read so many tutorials on changing the device to S-Off, and rooting, but it seems so complicated. This coming from someone who used to mod her SE K750i like crazy!

Anyway, my only concern is that I'm getting the device from Dubai, with an international guarantee, but should I end up bricking my device, I'm not sure if HTC will repair it (for free).

Now, my question is, is it really as complicated as it seems to S-Off, and if so, is it really worth rooting anyway?

IMO its always worth rooting, the day you get your device. The longer you have it the more of a mission with it wiping the device and all.
I will always root, but thats in part because Call Master is a root level call blocker and I basically use it every single day, probably the biggest advantage of rooting though is titanium backup, unlike non-root backup solutions, it can create the backup including all the current apps data so the only thing you loose is your home screen shortcuts. Very useful if your device ever needs to go in for repairs and you are fortunate enough to be able to run the backup. Ultimately for me it boils down to the fact that many of the apps I use regularly work with root permissions

Thanks for the reply, CranialBlaze. I'm just concerned about bricking my device, and whether or not it will be fixed under the international guarantee.

I won't mind waiting a while before rooting though; I have more than enough time on my hands to setup my phone again from scratch, lol!

At which university are you? For Stellenbosch, there is Inetkey.

Edit: Nevermind, I see you're at NWU.

So, I got my Desire S on Thursday, and I'm absolutely loving it! I'll have to hold off on rooting though, because our internet is down at the moment.

At least it gives me some more time to do a bit more research about rooting, and installing roms :p

Please report back if you find any stable roms.. :D

I've rooted my Desire S.. Still S-ON though. Been through hell. The HBOOT is 2.00.0002, which isn't friendly with Revolutionary. Had to use SuperOneClick, but for some reason, that didn't S-OFF the device. I managed to Flash CWM and do a nandroid backup, so for the moment, i'm content.

Would love to get rid of the Sense interface, so flashing a new rom seems like the next option. But most of the roms report problems or limitations(Camera, etc)... and it won't be so bad to wait for ICS first anyway.

Will do! :D If I do decide to root, i'll most likely downgrade to 0.98 or whatever. I'd like to wait for ics though, but I want to get rid of the Arabic languages on my device, and all the crappy default apps as well.

I've checked a few roms, and there are a few (like one or two, lol) that have the camera working, and the latest cyanogenmod 9 has the video working as well, if I'm not mistaken, except it has other bugs though.

So, I'm back, with a rooted, S-off Desire S :D

I've been switching between quite a few roms, and I'm currently running IceColdSandwich, and have no problems so far. No force closes, no reboots whatsoever, and everything I use on my device works perfectly. :)

I used CyanogenMod9 for a few days last week, and I was happy with that too, although the Play Store wouldn't load any pictures, even with a full wipe. I also had a few force closes, but it was very seldom though. Other than that, it's a pretty cool rom.

I must admit that I'm a fan of ICS, and although I like Sense (a lot), I'll wait for an official ICS Sense release from HTC.
