HBO announced the television adaptation for The Last of Us on March 6, 2020. The series will be produced by game director Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, creator of HBO’s hit mini-series Chernobyl. That’s not all! The show seems like it will have all sorts of details and additions that will not only adapt but also expand upon the Last of Us universe.

WHEN IS THE LAST OF US HBO RELEASE DATE?
Last of Us HBO was announced on March 6, 2020. Given the announcement, the show will likely air in late 2021 or early 2022. The show is seemingly going straight to series, which means there won't be an initial pilot episode or another preliminary litmus test.

"This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for us to partner with Craig [Mazin] ... and PlayStation to bring the virtual world of this acclaimed game to life," HBO Programming President Casey Bloys told The Hollywood Reporter.

If we had to predict a release date for the series using some previous examples, HBO’s Watchmen was first announced in 2018 then debuted in 2019. Big Little Lies was first announced as an HBO series in May 2015 then debuted in February 2017. While it could take longer, a year and a half is a standard turn around rate from series pick up to airing.

'The Last of Us' Series Gets HBO Greenlight

'Chernobyl's' Craig Mazin is writing the show with the mega-selling video game's creative director, Neil Druckmann.

HBO is pressing play on a series adaptation of The Last of Us.

The premium cable outlet has picked up the drama based on the hugely popular video game franchise from Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and the game's writer and creative director, Neil Druckmann. HBO and Sony Pictures TV are producing along with PlayStation Productions, Word Games and game developer Naughty Dog.

"Craig and Neil are visionaries in a league of their own," said HBO Programming executive vp Francesca Orsi. "With them at the helm alongside the incomparable Carolyn Strauss, this series is sure to resonate with both die-hard fans of The Last of Us games and newcomers to this genre-defining saga. We're delighted to partner with Naughty Dog, Word Games, Sony and PlayStation to adapt this epic, powerfully immersive story."

The Last of Us series is set 20 years after the destruction of modern civilization. It centers on Joel, a hardened survivor of the apocaplypse, who's hired to smuggle a 14-year-old girl named Ellie out of an oppressive quarantine zone. The seemingly small job becomes a brutal journey as they come to depend on each other for survival.

"We're thrilled to be working with HBO and this fantastic creative team to bring The Last of Us series to life," said Sony Pictures TV Studios president Jeff Frost and PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash in a statement. "PlayStation's innovative storytelling and ingenuity is a natural complement to SPT’s creative focus. Our collaboration is a great example of our 'One Sony' philosophy at work. We look forward to developing even more iconic game IP in the future."

HBO put The Last of Us into development in March. It's the latest video game franchise to get the premium cable treatment. Showtime is also at work on a series based on Halo, which is set to premiere sometime next year.

Mazin and Druckmann executive produce The Last of Us with Carolyn Strauss (Chernobyl, Game of Thrones), Naughty Dog's Evan Wells and PlayStation Productions' Qizilbash and Carter Swan. Johan Renck (Chernobyl) was set to direct the pilot but had to drop out because of a scheduling conflict.

Pedro Pascal hypes The Last of Us show with iconic line from the game

Pedro Pascal is playing Joel’s in HBO’s TV adaptation of The Last of Us. Is he already teasing the tagline of the upcoming zombie series?

Last week, we learned that The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martell on Game of Thrones) had landed the lead role in HBO’s adaptation of Naughty Dog’s beloved video game The Last of Us. He’ll play Joel, a hard-bitten survivor charged with escorting the young Ellie across a United States ravaged by a zombie apocalypse; Ellie is immune to the mutant fungus that has infected the world, and Joel must get her to a medical facility where she can be studied so scientists can develop a cure.

Ellie is played by Bella Ramsey, who played Lyanna Mormont on Game of Thrones, meaning we have a GoT reunion on our hands. But we have a while to go before we see them in character together. In the meantime, Pascal is talking the show up on his social media, captain both Twitter and Instagram posts with the same line:

…no matter what, you keep finding something to fight for.

Last Of Us TV Show Reportedly Has An 8 Figure Budget Per Episode

Fans don't have to worry about HBO's Last of Us series being low-quality, as the video game adaptation reportedly has a budget that's 8 figures.

HBO's The Last of Us television series reportedly has a massive budget in the 8-figure range per episode. Fans of Naughty Dog's hit video game series have been clamoring for a live-action adaptation for years, but aside from a movie that faltered in development, nothing has come along just yet. Luckily, HBO's Last of Us TV show is proving to be a more resilient project. The Last of Us was officially greenlit last fall, and it has since added multiple cast members and kicked off production earlier this month.

The first Last of Us game, which will form the basis of season 1, focuses on two loners living in a post-apocalyptic America after the Cordyceps virus ravaged the population. Hardened survivor Joel is tasked with bringing 14-year-old Ellie across the country, leading to a life-changing journey. Game of Thrones standouts Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey were cast as Joel and Ellie, respectively, and they'll be joined by Gabriel Luna and Last of Us game actors Merle Dandridge and Jeffrey Pierce. The series has yet to receive any kind of premiere date, but since production is still in the early stages, it likely won't arrive on HBO until next year.
