HD PVR update

MultiChoice gives details about its planned HD PVR updates and a cheaper HD PVR decoder

Rakitla also confirmed that the information given in the article regarding the new ‘entry level’ HD PVR was correct, adding that the company “cannot provide any further information on this decoder as we are still in the early stages of development of this product. Typically products such as these take 12 to 18 months to bring to market.”

Obviously not using anything standard.

I which there would be a day, that you could buy one satellite receiver, and then only change the smart card to change providers.

It astounds me how a technology website such as MyBB believes that 720p 'is not technically HD', SHOCKING! :eek:

no prices, no firm dates. Hardly the "details" the headline lead me to believe. Waste of time.

Hang in there...

For those who continously lambast the HDPVR offering, I would say that major improvements have occured in terms of stability and performance since its intro in 08. Clearly, it was rushed to market but Multichoice are doing everything to not only provide a similar user experience to their solid SDPVR, but added functionality like Catch-Up TV (HD & SD), series-linking amongst others.

Testing the various eco-systems, and subsequently testing integration of a software build is a very trying process for any software deployment initiative:
I would rather wait for a stable update then a rushed one just to add functionality for functionality's sake. I'm sure the managers at Multichoice are faced with these kind of decisions daily - they do not operate in a vacuum or ivory tower (even if the perception is there that they do)

I wish them luck..

I think 2010 could be a great year for DSTV...now bring on late December 09 already for some HD sport :)

I've had the HDPVR since its launch in August 2008, and I'd like to point out a couple of errors in this article:

"Since the launch of the HD PVR decoder in 2008, we have released 8 software upgrades and these will continue in the future."

No way have there been 8 software upgrades! I can distinctly remember only 3, and taking into account that I don't remember things well, there might have been 4, but no way have there been 8! I could be wrong - feel free to correct me.

"The most recent update was applied on the 8th of September and addressed several problems within the HD PVR firmware. These include the deletion of entire series; improvements to fast forward, rewind and TV guide load times."

"deletion of entire series" - what does this mean??? This is the 2nd time I've seen this in a MYBB article, and it really makes no sense. At no time has the HDPvr been able to record entire series. So how is it possible to delete an entire series? I can't imagine how they have managed to fix something that doesn't exist.


On a (slightly more) positive note, the last software "upgrade" has managed to improve fast forward and rewind a bit, but it could still do with more improvement.

The HDPvr does work, not fantastically, but since launch, they have managed to get it into a usable state. I'm looking forward to next year.
