HD recorder & DStv

I originally bought an LG DVR recorder in 2008 and have been using it ever since. Five years ago I noticed that they're not readily available anymore and so I imported a UK one through Raru. I assumed it would work the same.
Now that Eskom is doing loadshedding again my old LG is struggling to boot up so I thought I'd try installing the Panasonic but it's not working. It only has RF in and out and an HDMI out so I modified a cable with an f-type connector at one end to plug into my DStv decoder and plughed the HDMI into the TV. But there's still no signal.
Is this because the Panasonic's software can only pick up UK freeview channels or would it help to get Xtraview? My LG uses RCA cables and it picks up DStv easily. Would a RCA/coaxial cable work at all? I know I can just get an Explora but I've got this machine now and would like to use it.

You may need to check whether the Panasonic has to be tuned to correct frequency to detect the RF signal sent from the decoder RF out port..

Thanks for the reply, any idea how to do this? I can go to manual tuning but then it just searches and can't find anything.

Also is it possible to upgrade or service the old LG? I'm not that tech savvy so have no idea how to put in a new hard drive or anything like that. The DVR is broken so is there a way to copy what's on the hard drive onto my PC?

The RF out is on UHF channel 63 (156.75MHz)
HDCP is not part of an RF signal
Can the tuner in the recording VCR manage ch 63?

So initially it just shows image no 1. Then when I do auto search (no 2) no 3 comes up. If I do manual search no 4 comes up, which show there is signal strength so it is picking up something?

It doesn't come up at all from the channels I can select. I can't type in any numbers. So I guess it won't work.

Looks like it's scanning for DVB-T channels.
Try look for an option to change it to analogue.

I can't manually change the frequency. Isn't there some sort of modulator you can buy that will change the frequency from the DStv decoder to something the recorder can pick up?
