hi
Im abit worried about my opteron 170 chip(not overclocked) it seems to be running abit hot
I've seen it peak at about 65*c WITHOUT playing any games/labour intensive app the mobo also sometimes hits a 60*c !!! so is a case of me having a cr@p
case for airflow or my inexperiance with installing amd chips (my first tym) !

plz help if you can

I'd defiitely agree that something is waaaaay out of whack.

I myself run an Opteron 165 overclocked to 2600+ (48%). I have a Zalman Golden Orb cooling it so no Watercooling or anything else fancy. I idle at about 32* and can get up to 45* - 50* if I'm really pushing it (extended sessions of FEAR etc.). To do this I have upped voltages (both CPU and RAM), so my chips will be running hotter than normal.

First thing to check as you have guessed is you case cooling. Make sure cooling fans are balanced, i.e. that you are pulling cool air in and pushing hot air out. I have often seen people put all their fans to only suck or blow. It sounds to me like you are trapping hot air next to the CPU / Chipset. Can easily happen if you are only pulling air in or out and not establishing a flow. If you smoke, light a cigie next to the case and watch what the smoke does. (Should get sucked in and then pushed out). Also, take the side of your case off and compare temperatures. If there is no difference then something else is wrong.

reseat your fan should fine

i dont know if this stock cooling or not

but if you changed the stock fan to something else ensure it has thermal paste on it

if all else fails return it

Ye dude, something sounds amiss, I'd say, first thing to do is get some Arctic or Antec Silver compound and re-seat the cooler, ..if you really want to make the most of your stock cooling, lap the bottom of the heatsink.
Use 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper, and a little soapy water to lubricate, and rub in circles, turning the sink 90 deg.'s every 15-20 rotations.
Rinse the paper and heatsink every 5-10 min's, and let dry for a minute or so
repeat until smooth, 30min-1hr as long as you can stand! :)
Remember it's only about 1 - 1+1/2 cm2 in the middle of the cpu metal plate that transfers the heat.
Just before you seat the cooler, use a lint-free cloth and Isopropyl Alcohol (any Pharmacy) and wipe the cpu surface clean, ..wipe the bottom of the heatsink vigorously to get rid of any trace of foreign particles/dust etc.
..and ye as the guys say about airflow..
Good luck, hope you get it sorted out somehow! :)

I reseated the heatsink and fan which are stock and have taken the side cover off my comp but it hasnt made a difference the Mobo and CPU still hit
around 60*C when essentially doing nothing just listening 2 music (winamp)
or watching a movie  It does idle down to 32*C but it only last about a sec or to before it hits 60*C for a couple of secs(2-3) the fan does power up to a faster speed which then helps the temp idle down !?
The the mobo is a a8n32-sli deluxe with that heat pipe effort and some stack cool feature which is supposed to cool the mobo down ?

What temp do you get under 'load' ?
Most quite a few people get around 50deg with after-market cooling (which usually makes a big difference)

http://forums.amd.com/index.php?showtopic=78363

I"ll try running prime95 tonight but i gotta admit im worried about it , if it
hits 60*c at very light load wat will it hit at prime load !!
I cant get to that site my work blocks that site ! dammit !

just as a matter of interest what are you using to monitor the cpu

try going into your motherboard and checking it there

i know some program can give a very bad reading but im not sure what your using :)

like motherboard monitor if you get the m/b model wrong you will be a very very wrong reading

Im using the monitor that came with the mobo / not sure if its false reporting on me but the bios tells me that its about 38*C (cant remember exactly) for each (cpu&mobo) but that obviously (excuse spelling) cant tell me what it runs at under load maybe you could tell me of a better program to use ?? (mobo is a a8n32sli deluxe)

thanks

try motherboard monitor

download and look for your motherboard model

but the software that came with your motherboard should be fine

but give it a try

If you're new to installing CPU's and such, then I strongly recommend that you don't attempt to lap the heat-sink with an uber-expensive Opteron. You really are risking too much IMO. Rather practice on a cheap old PC first.

Secondly, you mentioned possible air-flow issues with your case. It is important that you have decent air intake and exhaust. Then make sure that your IDE (if any) and power cables are not cluttering the inside and interfering with the air-flow.

That said, your temps are slightly higher than they should be, even with poor air-flow. I'd suggest you get someone with some experience to reinstall the heatsink and ensure that the thermal compound is fine too. I don't really recommend the usual white paste, but even this should at least keep your temps on the safe side of 45degrees with basic usage such as playing music.

If you are seeing temps of 60deg and higher, then you shouldn't even bother with Prime95. That could simply push the temps well over 70, which is just bad news.

I'll be the 3rd person to recommend returning the PC to your supplier and insisting that they double-check the cooling (both CPU and motherboard heatsinks and the case fans).

cant return the comp to the supplier because I bought all the parts from different suppliers so I can send each supplier there respective part but I dont see how that would help due to the fact that It would need to be fully assembled with all the parts to see if theres a prob ?!

where did you buy them from?
the chip is from APOC:)D ) and the mobo is from a Company called Servertech the case is my old one from my celeron (no exhaust or frontal fans but there is a side fan on the case which does blow air on the cpu (should that be switched around to suck air out ? ) I'll tried removing the side to see if that helps but it didnt make diff
