Fast food delivery price pain in South Africa

South Africans pay a hefty price for the convenience of ordering from some popular fast food restaurants through delivery services like Uber Eats and Mr D.

However, while some fast food establishments charge premiums as high as 54%, the markups on meals from some popular fast food restaurants are significantly lower.

Most of the meal markups are around 20-30+% excl. service, delivery which can add on an additional R15-20+.
One example is Pedros half chicken and chips/paella - in store price R75, Uber marks it up to R105. With service and delivery added that is over R130, nearly double the in-store price you pay.

Only mitigation is signing up for Uber One at R50/pm which can save you a bit if you order more than say 4 times a month ( with minimum spend per order of R100)

I've really given up on delivery unless there is a special that makes sense.
I now mostly do order and collect massive bonus if the restaurant has an app that I can order on, so I don't risk human contact.
It's a shame I miss the convenience but would can you do, I'm not prepared to pay the mark up.

Ordering and delivery through Uber Eats and Mr D is a waste of money. I'm not paying such a premium just for delivery.

I order and collect. Yesterday I called the store as I was leaving Midrand Gautrain station. Picked up the food on my way home. No extra fees, food still hot when collected. Bonus is that the store is on my way home so a quick stop to pay and collect.
