I've been running my own WLAN for almost 2 years now.

I now read about this interesting JAWUG network. Maybe we can get this started in other areas? Any users in the Helderberg area (Somerset West, Strand, Gordons Bay) that will be willing to start a Wireless Community Network?

Do you have a router or access point? I am also in Strand. Maybe we should start with Point-to-point connection.

I am in Gordon's Bay and will (hopefully) be getting my wireless connection through snowball soon.

I'd keen on connecting to any community network in strand / gordon's bay.

Anyone have info on this?

Somerset West WLAN Helderberg West Side

Up on Western side of Helderberg overlooking Cape Point and Cape Town, WLAN's been up and running for some time... :)

We offer WLAN 2.4 Ghz outdoor antennas & equipment. No we're not a retail computer shop, but you can get the goodies from us on order if you need it.

Drop in at http://www.itworx.co.za/networking.htm :) for Omni's, Yagi's Sector and Flat Panel antennas.

Got a home based estate agent just round the corner running a
13dBi Flat Panel & 11Mbps Bridge / AP pointing toward Verkykerskop.

Express your freedom...go wireless

Dc++

Lets setup a dc++ network, if you take the pavillion as the center point, I'm sure there are enough people to chip in for expenses. I have super los to pavillion, and DEF is about 2KM away, DEAVOR should also not have a problem, he is just down the road from me, and SAVAGE you are right there.

It would require facing the antenna towards the central point hay? But, mine is facing the mountain to get my WISP still! (still active)

Savage= works for Cenergy networks?
They have a wireless network in the Strand for the corporates already it seems...

My AP is in bridge mode = to change it I have to go on the roof & change the mode of the AP to client mode to find other AP's right?

@ Def

Try this! Set you NIC to a static IP like 192.168.1.44 , then open internet explorer, goto http://192.168.1.1

There you can change from bridge to AP. Get fill in the web interface. Easy as pie.

Climb on the roof if you want, but its dangerous in the South Easter. Besides, to open the AP is a mission it has like 20 screws, then all you can do is reset it up there.

You might get a call from snowball, when they wonder what the **** you are doing with their equipment.

cool, thanks that worked...

oh, its MY equipment by the way :)
I paid for it, I own it!
That's the cool thing!

Now, these are some of the AP points I pick up...

GETY01 000B6B36C17C 2 32% AP //i get this one all the time, whose is it?! @ the 'jetty'?

UDCH 00026F06D66E 1 37% // new one

swwest - // snowball's

my antenna is facing towards the mountain, Stellenbosch side.

I will more than likely start getting something started again towards Februarry...

gety01 = some *****d wannabe wisp sitting with adsl and charging people insane rates for access (varynet.co.za) Their AP is on top of the HUGE flats across the road from the putt putt stuff in Beach Rd (You can see about the entire Helderberg from there).

As I said, I can more than likely do something at the Pavilion (Feb / Mar).... The problem is just I have no LOS to the pavilion. Theres a big ass old age home in the way (far to many of those arround here) :D

Hi Chris! Thanx a lot for your nice reply about GETY01 / VaryNET. It's funny that you call my network "*****d up" since you got fired. Chris was working for VaryNET and Ournet for a couple of months, he really knows his stuff, as he was allready a pro on UNIX, OS2 etc since I know him (back in 1994 +-). He worked for me and my partner, and after he took over the entire network, locked us out of the control interface, demanding a bigger salary. It only took me a few hours to reconfigure my entire network. Since I reconfigured the network, we hardly had any network related problems. Chris should work for a HUGE ISP with a need for large PERL, PHP, SQL etc sites, scripts and databasis, not for a wireless ISP. He is the best in what he does, as long as he stays with it. GETY01 / VaryNET, happens to be the largest WISP in the Helderberg area for the passed 7months at least. We are in the process of merging with Snowball, which will make us one of the biggest WISP's in the Western Cape. We will soon also cover Grabouw and a few other places. We allready have coverage in 90% of Stellenbosch, Jonkershoek, Strand, Somerset West, Gordon's Bay etc etc etc. We thought of using IVORY HEIGHTS as a highsite, as I have permission to do so, but the site we currently have on the Helderberg mountain is a lot better. We don't have one case where someone can see IVORY HEIGHTS and not HELDERBERG. VaryNET also supply internet in places such as High Riding Estates, where ADSL MIGHT be available in about 2 years time.

Just to let everyone know, I don't have any grudges against SAVAGE, I have even recommended him to some people based on his skills, but he should focus on what he does best. Like the world's best car macanic shouldn't all of a sudden start building cars, he's just not made for it.

If anyone would like to try VaryNET out, send us an email on sales@varynet.co.za, and we could contact you for a site survey and a demo on our service. We are very busy with new installations at present, but we can surely send out the site-survey team to do a test and demo.

HEY, Everyone must have a WONDERFULL 2006!!!
