Hi all. Need to help a friend choose a 19" LCD screen. Just to say upfront - they are looking only for 19" size and not widescreen.

Criteria/Usage: not used much for gaming, primarily for general PC use (web browsing, email), some Photoshop work, and for the occassional video/DVD viewing. They're looking for a high quality screen, as they have fairly sensitive eyes (can't be excessively bright) and will be doing extended viewing. Also please let me know what specs should be looked at most for this scenario. Price budget is around R2500-R3500. Warranty is also important, and DVI input a must. Res must be 1280x1024.

The contenders at the moment:

HP L1955
Brightness: 250 cd/m²
Contrast Ratio: 1000:1
Resolution: 1280x1024

Dell 1907FP
Brightness: 300 cd/m²
Contrast Ratio: 700:1
Resolution: 1280x1024

LG L1980Q
Brightness: 250 cd/m²
Contrast Ratio: 500:1
Resolution: 1280x1024

Viewsonic VX922
Brightness: 270 cd/m²
Contrast Ratio: 650:1
Resolution: 1280x1024

Samsung 940BF
Brightness: 300 cd/m²
Contrast Ratio: 700:1
Resolution: 1280x1024

Acer AL1951cs
Brightness: 400 cd/m²
Contrast Ratio: 700:1
Resolution: 1280x1024

Any others worth looking at?

Cheers,
X

I repeat: "Criteria/Usage: not used much for gaming, primarily for general PC use (web browsing, email), some Photoshop work, and for the occassional video/DVD viewing. Thing is with the el'cheapo ones they cause strain on his eyes and also for the occasional video/DVD they are not suitable. Not saying he has oodles of cash, but has enough to look into the higher-quality ones (what IIRC is called business oriented as opposed to value or gamer oriented).

I told him about this, but with the recent price hike it has gone out of reach. I can get it direct from the importers and my cost price is already just over R4000 EXCLUDING vat.

I'm using the 19" Samsung Syncmaster 930BF (4ms) LCD. They are just over
R2100 excl vat and profits.. But a retail shop will charge u maybe R2600-R2900 max. It doesn't have speakers built in(Built in speakers sound bad anyhow). This monitor is very nice for usage on Gaming and DVD's, also perfect for Office use as its a very Bright monitor.

I'm happy with it thusfar.

Cool, thanks. That price sounds right, although the newer model is a little more (940BF). Speakers are not mandatory by any means.

As mentioned in the first post - excessive brightness is bad, as he has fairly sensitive eyes. In other words, it needs to have the brilliance/vibrance of LCDs but not excessive brightness.

hmmm, I don't agree with this, quality panels can be adjusted for comfort ... if your display doesn't have proper brightness, you won't be able to work on it in a very bright environment ...

Get the ACER its an awesome screen and if the brightness is a problem simply turn it down slightly. :D

The ACER scored 91% "Gold Award" in the lastest (July) CustomPC SA mag (see Page 44).

Model reviewed: Acer AL1951

"The absolute pick of the litter so far: quality, performance, style, all rolled into one well thought-out LCD package." (CustomPC SA July Edition, Page 44)

the Viewsonic VX922 scored only 71% (Page 46)
