Hi guya,

Could anyone tell me where in South Africa I can get my Vodacom R201 permanently unlocked so that I can use it anywhere around the world and under any network provider?

Thanx.

This might not be the answer you are wanting but ALL Phones/Modems are NOT Network Locked if purchased in this country by law. Please try to take a look at your SETTINGS and in particular the APN etc. when logged into the user interface on the device or the web version of that. The next thing to look at is the 3G frequencies range of operation to determine if it will operate in all parts of the world. Typical worldwide frequency usage:
1) GSM = 850/900/1800/1900 Mhz
2) UMTS/3G = 900/2100 Mhz
3) LTE/4G = 800/900/1800/2100/2600 Mhz
According to Huawei the R201 specifications operates on UMTS/3G 900/1900/2100MHz with 7.2 Mbit/s DL and 5.7 Mbit/s UL and GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

Actually, this only applies to HANDSETS. The R205/R201 is an internet device licensed and produced by vodafone (Hence the network branding on the device). It is not network locked, but it doesn't operate under the same band infrastructures as cell c or mtn. This is in terms of their proxie settings. There is a way to do it, which i am not allowed to post here. You will have to go to Mtn/Cell/etc to have them change the proxy settings for your device. (I know all this, because i work as a data tech for vodacom, so work on these routers all the time).

Don't think those are network locked, but like Ivanr says you have to set the APN as per the carrier settings of the sim you're trying to use. You do so like so:
Connect to your router via wifi.
Goto 192.168.0.1
It only prompts for a username.
Default is "admin", that should get you to the console.
Go to connection profile, set the APN name, get that from the carrier.
If you can't find that on the carrier website, check this site:

I have an advance config guide for this router, send me a PM with your email if you want it.

If you work as a data tech for Vodacom, please mail me regarding this. You'll get my e-mail on the GAL. A number of your statements are not quite correct.

Hi Guys.

Got back from US with a Vodafone R201 WiFi router, as my luck will have it its says Invalid Sim the moment i put a Vodacom Sim in.

I have tried most Huawei Unlocker, and various other ones, but none detect the actual device, i have changed the Com port in Control panel, but i noticed the Modem does not install the same drivers as on certain videos one can find on the net.

I would appreciate anyone who can PM me and point me in the right direction.

Was this modem bought from Vodacom or Vodafone in the UK?
