Time to get this darn website up and running!

Mad ,i went to that shadowfire.org site but i couldnt get connected to the chat room:

Heres where I am at so far:
1]I have registered a www.eyesafety.mine.nu with dysdns.org
2]I have installed apache
3]My webpages are in the "htdocs" apache folder
4]On my computer I can get onto my website by typing the full website address in the browser
5]I am hosting this myself using mywireless 128 package

other ppl cant seem to see it though.

this weekend ,i want to get this thing up and running!

Trying...

it finds and resolves to a 66.18.8x.x IP address. So.. the problem is that your DNS updater is not updating. You need to get a decent client such as inadyn or dynsite (I recommend and use dynsite)

Also, you never use the www. The system will resolve eyesafety.mine.nu to your updated DNS IP. adding the www makes it something else completely. Unless you registered www.eyesafety as a hostname (unlikely). To open a webpage just make sure apache is running and assuming you can get it working locally make sure its port 80 ie. localhost:80 then try eyesafety.mine.nu:80.

A simple test for the DNs update is to ping your name ie. ping eyesafety.mine.nu and the pings (if working) should be under 10ms i.o.w local pings.

Again, make sure that if you do use a firewall, that port 80 is open for incoming and outgoing traffic.

I have done exactly what you are doing ie. Apache http server over dyndns on mywi 128 with a firewall and mine works ok. Not that I have a fancy page up bt I use it for remote access to a bunch of stuff on my pc (the dns name) and I use apache to host a file or 2. Once you play with it, you can do some nifty stuff with a 24/7 connection! Except if its crawling like right at the moment. my site is sum1.gotdns.com and sum1.gotdns.com/images holds some files for remote access (for example). I also have a webmail server on port 82 and a number of other servers on similar ports

Ok Greedysflyza!

I have downloaded and installed dynsite (build750.3)

hopefully i have set it up ok.
anyway its running and i have a little tv screen pic in my tray

if i double click the icon ,and then double click my website name its says the host resolves to current ip

using kerio, i still dont get u on the port 80 thing.

so i wonder if u getting the site yet?
or what needs to be done now to configure the dysite thing

if u r using Kerio WF, under Traffic policy make a new rule with source=sentech dest=Firewall port 80 PERMIT. That should open the way for a server.

I cant ping you but thats probably because your kerio is blocking it. For ping to work you need to create a rule for it.

Im using KWF 5.1.10 and have no hassles (also dynsite 1.something). My dynsite had issues before but it seems stable now and picks up my IP on each disconnect.

If you need extra help, mail me off list or get me on yahoo after 6PM tonight. My yahoo ID is one of the icons above

Fairly quick to load the page for me...but the images take a while...
As to the look, no offense but it looks pretty amateur - its clearly a Front Page special...also the graphics are not well trimmed (lots of white artifacts around the edges).

I would suggest losing the blue background and using white - that will sort out a bit of the image artifact problems. Also standardise your fonts - use the same font face throughout the site and use tables to format and layout your text cleanly.

Try to create a banner containing the logo, company name and page options, and put this banner as the header for every page. That way you have a nice standard page layout to work with and your navigation is taken care of for every page.

As an example of what I'm talking about, you can look at www.aeroaqua.co.za - its a site I did years ago while in varsity. Nothing spectacular, but it paid for petrol [;)]

I'm being constructive here dude, please don't take it personally. If you try my tips, I'm sure the site as a whole will improve :)

Hehe, we all start somewhere :) If I had to show you my first sites ... well, that would be rather embarising.

My recomendation ... tables ... lots and lots of tables :) And white is good. Specially for corporate type stuff. Anything white grayish or whatever. Anyways :)

I agree with the above comments........

Try and focus on getting the basic look right first and worry about the content later

Keep going ....... maybe want to look at PHP apps

You are starting to learn how easy it is to run websites...... well done

Counters..... I have never seen a need or use so have never bothered to use them

PHP..... programming language..... allows you to intergrate into databases and create more dynamic websites....

Just a carrot in front of you.... to keep you going

Well done
