Hi,

As above, been given the two opportunities to consider moving forward and I'm confused.
Always had an interest in Cyber Security but because of it's niche nature I know about it from the darkweb and movies . Sounds like interesting career prospects after being a BI,SharePoint and Backend (C#) dev for 4 years.. This opportunity is in the banking industry.

Java Dev.. Well it's a java dev. :p

Thoughts guys?
Career marketability are a factor here and moving forward.

I wouldn't bother. It is a niche industry and room for growth is porbably very limited.

Why don't you do yourself a favour, resign from the damn bank and go work for a real company :p

No really, companies like BBD, Entelect etc. are dev houses. Development and developers are the focus of the company and not just another department. Get out of the "IT Department" setup.

$$$ and staff rates are keeping me hostage.
Believe it or not in some teams there are amazing teams that will make you feel like you are in a dev house. No corporate BS in that regards , with the blessing of management.

And I have worked for Dev houses before. While I enjoy the environment, had too many problems (management etc).
Willing to write me a recommendation for BBD?

Cyber security.

No reasons?

This "delusion" that banks pay better than dev companies. Dev companies actually pay very well but your package is more specific and tied to your performance.

Cyber security gets boring after a while. Up to you though.

Then you're doing it wrong. Because its constantly evolving.

The "Up to you" was actually meant for him to make his own decision because he might like it over dev, or the other way around.

For me, its boring. The 1 half of my job is about controlling access to all systems in the company (I developed the access management system) and the other is a dev job that is not needed in this topic.

I'm not saying that I know everything about security (definitely not) but can you enlighten us on all the avenues and various things that you have been working on in light of security?

That is a sys admin.

It would help broaden my understanding.

Cyber security in my eyes. Is a person who develops tools to detect or to perform arbitrary attacks in order to determine weak points, to be able to analyse code and understand and determine potential 0day exploits, write patches for said exploits. Come up with novel ways to prevent various attacks, be it hardware or software level.

Granting permissions to a user on a database is not cyber security.

That is the Wikipedia definition.

I'm asking you what you have worked on in light of security that is also exciting.

No its not a systems admin job, the people that I wrote it for are sys admins and security specialists.

We do get the usual audit queries every now and then.

See, this is why I say stick to being a dev and forget about the cyber security stuff. At least that way you'll know what your job actually is :p

It all depends on your passion as well.

I love breathing life into something new...
Trying to do something in that regard with my career too

Dev is life  but I'm not an amazing Hamster as yet. As mentioned a dev house would be an ideal environment to grow in that instance but these kinda things aren't available to everyone as well...

And yes, you would want to go to a dev house because a Corp is not best place to learn to be a dev.

Cyber security is a huge field, that's why I was asking for examples because it's easy to miss new things in this ever evolving field.
