Am trying a prepaid vodacom simcard in my Hauwei E620 datacard.

Tried to use the MTN datalink software, without changing any settings, but I get an error 619.

How do I set it up?

I am using Windows Vista.

Try changing the APN to 'internet'.

The 619 error is very common on Vodacom, i usually get it about 3 times EVERY time i try to connect to Vodacom . I also use an MTN sim, exact same settings, much less issues.

So don't assume it doesn't work if you get 619 errors. 619 is the equivalent of a "network busy" signal in 90% of the cases i've experienced, doesn't mean your settings are wrong [although you also get it if your APN is wrong, but MTN and Voda uses same APN].

I also see you're in Centurion, i am too, trust me it's 619-hell here. I literally "spam connect" until it connects ...just keep going eventually you will get through.

I was on MTN 2GB last month, Vodacom 2GB this month. Results so far:

MTN = very stable, connects easily , consistant speed [but not necissarily fast]
Vodacom = unstable, mission to connect [619 errors], if the connection sticks, then if FLIES ..extremely fast speeds and so on.

So it's a win some loose some situation.

In summary : If you can connect to MTN with your card, then you should be able to connect to Vodacom with the EXACT same settings. The only operator that you need some manual tweaking is Virgin.

The MTN F@stlink software defaults to the "myMTN" APN.

Thanks, this is very helpful.
Is it always like that on Vodacom in the Centurion area, having to 'spam connect'?
Ive been using MTN HSPDA for a while and I've never had any problems connecting.

I am in the same situation where i thought I would give Vodacom a twirl, i downloaded the Vodacom software and am running it concurrently with MTN software - i find that i am always getting connection errors and i must say that MTN seems to be more stable and quicker, i am just trying to use up my data bundle before time runs out but am finding it very difficult to do because i can never connect.

Aah, my bad. I come from the other end, using Vodafone software where the default APN is "internet" which works with MTN too. So yea, make sure it's "internet" if you wanna use Vodacom.

It seems to be during specific times [peak hours?] . Usually my connection starts to get really wobbly between 7pm - 9pm.By wobbly i mean it disconnects out of the blue, and when you reconnect you get error 619 or 31. So far, to just keep on hammering that connect button until it connects , works for me.

At this stage, coming from 2 months of using MTN [2GB special] , must say i'm a bit frustrated with the Vodacom connection this month. If MTNs prices are still the same [2GB special or 1GB package] i will probably go back to that.

Tx guys, it works. didnt have many problems connecting, although the connection did drop to almost standstill 2 times.
This does not usually happen on MTN. Will keep monitoring and comparing.

One more question, How do I check my data balance on VC?

There's a few ways [and this is where Vodacom beats MTN hands down, especially with the SMS options...i wish MTN can wake up with this ]:

a] *111# [follow the menu..need a phone for this]

b] www.vodacom4me.co.za [register + login, and somewhere under accounts ->
data bundles] . The site has it issues, but for balance checking it's mostly ok.

c] SMS "balance" to 100 [this seems to work randomly unfortunately, but at least you can do this directly from your card].

d] SMS "MM" to 31050 . [this also works randomly]

Between c and d, you should be able to get "something" without needing a phone or a webpage, but it's not very consistent and stable [i.e. not getting any response at all etc etc]

Had to spam connect to get into VC last night. This was between 8 and 10pm.
And the speed sucked. 3g all the way. I should never have doubted MTN :(

Not at all, but aside from their software working all the time (which beats having to connect/disconnect over again until VC works) they still too consistently slow and expensive.

But with the spam connecting... i only found out that it happens with the VMC dashboard. When i use my MTN dashboard it connects first time everytime.

Interesing, maybe i'll give it a whirl, where do you download the MTN dash?

As for speed, yes MTN tend to be very stable but often it's "consistently slow" though [for me anyway]. I still achieved the fastest speeds on Vodacom , unfortunately it seems to go really fast when i'm not looking [like downloading 100MBs of windows updates while i'm in the bathroom] .

But for what i normally use the internet for, i prefer slightly slower speed but "always on and stable" vs. super fast but constantly disconnect or "stops with no activity" and then jumps between 1 Mbits and 3kbits whenever it feels like.
