So I've been reviewing my budget of late, and I realised I spend R3500/month of groceries - this does not include going out, or any fast food. This seems excessive surely? I live with my wife only, and we have a small dog.

And I'm struggling to understand it too. We dont eat like kings at all either. Is this normal?

That's just over R50 a day each for breakfast, lunch and supper. Excluding the days you eat out.

Record your spending and you'll see what you're doing.

Is the R3500 just for groceries or does it include toiletries and cleaning products ?

Yes, everything like that. Are you saying its normal?

Sadly, yes. For a family of 4 (2 teenage boys who are eating constantly) and two dogs, we spend about R 6500 a month . Prices have really gone up. You may find that your toiletries and cleaning supplies make up about 20% of that amount.

Seems about normal, also depends on how often you eat out. But everything is damn expensive..

Daym!!! The wife, myself and two toddler daughters spend about R3500 per month on groceries

We have a baby too, that's a separate budget though. This includes all household cleaning things, toiletries and takeaways. It's about a grand a week at woolies though... love that place.

I agree with you samr1wp.
You don't buy toiletries and cleaning products every month.
R1500 for 2 people can do something, but only the necessary or basic.
Me, my husband and little daughter (14 months) spend R3500/month excluded those "spoil yourself" moments!

Family of 3, my wife, toddler and I, with all foods, cleaning aids etc...between R4000 - R5000 a month. Most times its closer to R4000. Frickin sad though...cost of food has sky rocketed. Washing powder at like R80 etc...you VERY quickly reach R3000 easily for a family.

A while back, my brother in law moaned about the money they were spending on food...it was just him and his wife. He said it should be R1000 a month total and was only prepared to give R500. I was like WTF...cmon dude! Thats just ridiculous!

Oh...next time go with your SO shopping....dude, it will be a nasty surprise though :(

In our case I'm the only one working. So she goes shopping (as is the case at this very moment).

It hurts too much to look at the SMS notifications, so I just ignore them :p

I live alone and spend R1500 p/m. I'll be cutting on take-aways.
