my :erm: has just become a

Guess I owe the SO some sort of apology... She's been telling me *everything* has become insanely expensive for um... a while now

Ah one of those who still believe that a loaf of bread costs 2 bucks :D

As CrazyFig suggested join her sometime. You will receive a nasty reality check on the price of groceries.

thats just food and stuff

cause other stuff like detergents and stuff you dont buy every month
When you become a family man you will learn that items like toothpaste, lotion, shampoo and conditioner, toilet rolls, soaps, deoderants, sanitary wear, washing powder and sunlight liquid are bought every month. Still wanna get married, Sammy ? :p

Last month I bought a whole Lamb, cost me a thousand bucks and that is excluding the other things.
So yeah the cost of buying groceries has gone up considerably.

So I've been reviewing my budget of late, and I realised I spend R3500/month of groceries - this does not include going out, or any fast food. This seems excessive surely? I live with my wife only, and we have a small dog.

And I'm struggling to understand it too. We dont eat like kings at all either. Is this normal?

compare prices before you shop.

Dont be loyal to one shop.

Some of the stuff are much cheaper at some shops.

We have friends where the husband is trying to cut down on expenses and limited his wife to r1800/month on groceries. Obviously he hadn't ever been shopping with her and had a pretty warped idea of how much things cost especially with 2 young children. The problem that happens then is he budgeted his remainder elsewhere and by end of month they had to borrow nappies from us because they literally had NOTHING in the cupboards and no money to buy with. If you need to budget then you need to be highly realistic and informed as to what it will really cost you to buy articles of food and sundries or it will bite you as badly as splurging.

I went shopping yesterday, got the necessary old cereals, rusks, rice, tinned foods eg tomatoes, about 2 weeks worth of meat and it came up to 2k. I havent gotten any fruit and veg or milk, and that would probably have to spend another R2k on food for the month. That is what Cerebus budgets for us, and is ok, but I was actually in shock how much things have gone up even in this last month. Regular old Ouma rusks used to be R18-20 on an expensive month, now it is R27-R30. My sister told me to ditch Pick a Pay and shop at Shoprite as she is sure she is saving some doing her shopping there. Regular lean mince is now R82 per kilo. I havent bought much meat as I was told a certain small shop in Strand where we live actually sells meat at better prices, and I am yet to find fruit and veg that is good quality and better priced. I found another little stall in Strand, super affordable, but you have to consume all the fruit and veg you bought on the day, as they are super ripe. Also no use.

Main reason why we buy at Pick a pay - Vitality, some months I end up hardly paying for gym, and even Vitality, but yeah, wondering if it is really a saving, as Pick a pay seems expensive.

Crazy, but i can relate. Although luckily, the extra over budget money just comes out of my savings so I dont have to borrow...but its not ideal.

I'll just have to re-evaluate the budget, and become more realistic. I really feel sorry for people who earn anything less than me, and I consider my salary above average.

Thanks for the input everyone.

I usually budget 100 bucks a day for everything after my debit orders have gone off. This includes all food and entertainment including petrol. What I have realised is that for food alone, I can eat well for R1500 p/m. That's only me though, including a tub of protein powder. I also use discovery vitality quite a lot.

I would look into what you spend on eating out/take aways. I've found that that **** is insanely expensive. Sure, treat yourselves every so often, but making it a habbit drains your finances quite quickly.

R3500 for 2 people is normal, if you don't eat like kings, you're buying the wrong food (probably premade bull**** that cost a ton) :)

+1, I went through a whole costing exercise. For example, I bought Steers, then "remade" the burgers with raw ingredients just from Spar.

The price I pay for Steers vs making my own burgers, I not only got better quality burgers (with, bacon + egg + lettuce + tomato + cheese that the Steers ones didn't), it was 1/4 of the price to make 1. And it's not even convenient for me to go get take aways anymore, because for the same amount of time I spend driving there/waiting in line/getting the food/driving back I spend less time making my own food now.

Any extra I used to spend goes into things like more spices/pots and pans and even some debt
