Hi guys,

I need 2 things:
1) Advice on the setup, feesability and future
2) A bit of help/advice on setting up the router

Here's the situation:
I'm considering hosting my website by myself on ADSL. To begin with, I have a Billion Bipac 5102 modem/router I need to configure and setup.

Here's the equipment:
Billion Bipac 5102 4-port ethernet modem/router
No-ip.com application and infrastructure
FreeBSD or OpenBSD (they have a no-ip.com port)

A friend of mine and I tried last weekend to setup this router. Everytime we go to the website configured in the no-ip application, the routers HTML interface (it has a web based setup program) on port 80 would come up. So we tried to re-route the incomming calls to my PC. We tried NAT and the packet filtering features. Has anyone had any luck in this kind on setup on this router?

Also, what are some of the potential hurdles and obstacles in hosting a website like this. Bearing in mind that I want to do it as economically as possible by myself!

Also, BIG one ... since a 512K ADSL only has 256K upstream, I would rather get another router and another 512K ADSL line to make a full 512K upstream than upgrade to 1024K. This would require some crafty configuring as I would like to load balance the 2 or more ADSL lines. Has anyone had any experience with hosting a website like this?

Thanks

that may be a problem, if possible at all. the netgear modems you can very easily add a service to allow port 80 to fwd to the ip of your pc, not sure on billion routers how to do it but will also be possible. rather just upgrade your 1 line to a 1mbps (now 4meg) line and then you have 384k upload.

but ja it works fine, no reason not to do it

Hi

1. Are you running the www.no-ip.com on the router or on the PC? Cuase the 5102 only supports www.dyndns.com.

2. What version of F/W do you have on the router?

3. Here is the steps on how to port forward on the 5102:

3.1. Please go to www.dyndns.com and register.
3.2. Go to the web-interface of the router --> Access Management --> DDNS --> and enter all your details there.
3.3. Click on Advance setup --> NAT --> Virtual Server --> and please enter the relevant ports that needs to be forwarded. E.G. Start Port:80 End Port:80 Local IP Address: 192.168.1.33(Server)

This should do the Trick.

Just remember that someone from outside must try to acces the server, because you cant sit behind your own lan, go out, and come back in again. So if you need help testing it drop us a mail at support@billionsa.com and we'll be glad to help.

Heya,

Well, I think the load balancing is going to be a better option. I will go for Telkom ADSL on one, and IS ADSL on the other. I prefer the load balancing option because if for some reason one of the service providers is having trouble, you've still got the other! Also, I love a good challenge! Google has some amazing load-balancing capabilities, and I wanna try my hand at some! Also, FreeBSD holds the world record for TCP/IP throughput (not that I'll ever get there buy hey), it's used by Yahoo!, and OpenBSD's OpenSSH powers Cisco routers, but I'll be implementing it with their PF (Packet Filter) application, so the load balancing is gonna be World Class (Will even detect a line going down, and also when I add more ADSL's, they will easily fit into the model)!

Anyway, you said it "works fine". What is your setup? What were some difficulties or Gotchas you faced?

Hi Mr Billion Tech,

Thanks a million! I love the modem/router, I'm planning on buying a small army of them!!! I use no-ip because they have a FreeBSD/OpenBSD port of their application. But that's only software. So do you think it will work on FreeBSD/OpenBSD on dyndns.com without running any program (I'm sure it will, just checking!) The main reason I was hesitant to do the dyndns.com setup ... was because what if I buy another Billion router/modem model and it doesn't have the setup for dyndns.com in the F/W. Then I'm stuck with the same problem!!!

Kind Regards
