Hey there.

My mate has turned to me in my infinite wisdom regarding the new PC that he wants to buy and so now I turn to you guys. :)

He needs it for general things like the net, playing movies and dvds and such and also to run engineering programs like Pro-E and Matlab. No major gaming and not much else.

What would you guys recommend for this?

I was going with one of the cheap AMD cpu's, a gig of RAM, 250GB HDD, and not much else.

He is going to get a 19 or 20" LCD to go with it. Also, he needs a dvd-writer and a wireless network card.

What about graphics? Would 1GB RAM be enough? And what kind of gfx card would be sufficient? he is a student like me so keeping it cheap is always paramount...

Feedback appreciated :)

even thought I'm an AMD fanboi, I'd have 2 say go with a Core2 Duo - cheap, silent and fast

Cool beans...So how's this?:

CPU

AMD XP3500+ Dual Core. R710

Mobo: this one with onboard gfx R773

Ram : 2GB TeamElite R1699

320GB Seagate HDD - R800
Dvd-writer - R350
network card - R200
Case + PSU- R500

That makes about R4700....which looks good.

Oh Beanie boy, it is now...

core 2 duo outperforms amd BIG Time

Yes, a stock E6600 outperforms a stock 6000+... NOT!

Go eat a Apple and give all your piles of money, with which you can buy expensive Core 2 Duos and expensive socket 775 good overclocking motherboards, to us... :p

Well, with AMD prices the way they are now, I think you would be nuts to consider Intel over them for a slight performance gain.

Also, if you are not going to game much, then i doubt you would really notice much difference between a similar spec AMD and Intel chip.

Not even in gaming, there the graphics card would be the most important, and the amount of RAM, then the CPU...

In en- and decoding apps Core 2 Duo will shine.

And IF you have the money for top of the range performance and/or want to overclock the hell out of a processor, get a Core 2 Duo...

Well Intel price cuts are coming so wait til end of the month and then choose..

Yeah, good plan.

However, Intel need to look at bringing the price of their boards down as well then. I could not and Intel board with dual core support, DDR800 support AND onboard gfx for less than about R1300, almost double a similar AMD board...

super show me where the 6000+ plus can stay with the e6600 plz

where are these benchies :)

amd is behind core 2 its not even funny

Yeah, back on topic for a bit...

Should my mate want to game at some stage, what would you gusy recommend?
Waiting for the 8800 prices to drop or spending like R1200 on a 7-series? He is wary of buying 2nd hand, just fyi...
