HI All

Just wanted to ask for some consumer advice

I am in the market for a car for preferably up to R100K I know that is not a lot but that is an amount I know I can pay off comfortably

Trouble is I don't know what to buy

but I do know what I don't want to buy and these are the Reno Kwid ,the Datsun go ,the Hyundai Getz [due to age] and the Hyundai i10 [not the grand]

I am still not sure about the Figo I am not particularly keen on it but I can be convinced if a good enough argument is presented

I would not mind the Vivo but I do find a lot of models on the market a bit spartan as it would seem there were few models with any extras like electric windows that where sold during the early years of its release

also please note i am financing so anything older [as currently writing this] 2009 is off limits

any help would be appreciated

Don't trust anything the dealer tells you, negotiate everything down and refuse to pay for things that are not tangible ("on the road fees")

Be ready to walk away, there will always be another deal.

I do like the Sandero but I am unsure of it since it is a Renault but what would you say of a model that is 5 years old and has 48k is good or should I just avoid it all together

Don't do it, stick to the tried and tested formula, Japanese or Korean, enjoy your first car and thereafter you can go and explore other models. Not saying the Renault will give issues, just saying play it safe.

Look at an i20, Rio or a Yaris. Suzuki also has very reliable cars, I am a fan of the first gen Swift.

Would skip the Datsun - if you intend on walking away from an accident alive, anyway.

Well in Cape Town where I live I can not find a Rio or Yaris for the former none are sold for 100k or less and for the latter for 100K a Yaris will have 150k km and more on the clock so it would be driven into the ground and I don't want that. Same with the Swifts plus since they are all imported I don't think the parts are going to be cheap.

The i20 is in the same boat as both the Rio and the Yaris if I want a model that has not been driven into the ground I will have to spend more then I want

I also must add I never liked the 2nd generation Yaris which seems to be the most common Yaris I find online as I never could get used to having the instrument cluster in the middle of the dashboard instead of the right side the correct side

I understand, then the Renault is your next best bet.
indeed but the insurance on it is too steep especially if you new to your own insurance like me the cheapest I can get R900 the highest I was quoted was Outsurance at R1500 the Sales person didn't even try to make me understand or explain why would I pay that much for a car that should not be costing that much

Yeah, that's almost like an installment on another car. Which other models would you consider?

Dont forget the Sandero isn't really a Renault, it's a Dacia. They were built for rough roads in Eastern Europe so should be rugged and well put together. Being a bit more low tech probably helps with reliability.

Something to consider, it might be your first car, but it's not your dream car so don't put too much emphasis on what you want but rather concentrate on getting a car that can do what you require of it, which I assume would be to take you to work in relative comfort and safety.

A Ford Figo can fulfill that chore with ease.

The Picanto looks good but they are being snapped up quickly and the ones that are left are usually the base models with too much Kms on the clock or just too expense to buy other then that I would like the fiesta but again the good ones go quickly and the left overs are the broken ones.

At the start I hoped for a polo even a 2010 model but I realise now that is never going to happen they are either sold on the same day or have very high kms and even then they go quickly I guess people just like polos that much and would buy them in any condition

Yes, the 0.9t engine is 100% Renault though, that's my only beef with it. I've seen one example of a failed cam chain already at just over 100k, that does not inspire much confidence.

If he could get the earlier second gen models with the NA 1.4l.

my main issue with the figo is the safety as I come to realise that all the indian sourced cars seem to have the same problem they are not meant to try and safe the lives of the people in them during a crash

Isn't a Polo just too much trouble though? Talking about the theft risk.

there are lots of first gen Sanderos on the market trouble is I find them ugly as sin and do not want to own one even if it is solid much in the same why no one liked mid 2000s korean cars here they may work well but they were boring and ugly to look at

Yes, stay away from the first generation, they are rubbish.

Don't be too afraid of cars around the 100k mileage, properly maintained cars don't fall apart when they reach 100k kms, especially the Asian models.
