Here are the Tesla Powerwall systems you can buy in South Africa

Is there even a point to this article, if the Rand pricing is not included?

Existing local solutions are probably way cheaper than any Tesla Powerwall setup.

Tesla is worse than apple when it comes to hype articles, excessive pricing and inferior products.

Hmm, didn't realise how ugly the inverter is.

Still, going to get one. Just wish the inverter had been built in so I wouldn't have that ruining the design

I suspect there's going to be plenty you didn't realise. Like just how little power 2kW is. Good luck with one iBattery.

Or you could contact Tesla and ask if they'd supply you just the cover. It'll serve your purposes perfectly, and be about as useful as the real thing.

My, you do seem bitter don't you

Except for the Model S. I think Tesla is doing a great job.

I think Apple and Tesla both make fantastic products. The Model S is easily the best car I have ever driven.
Why people feel the need to go into a thread about a companies products that they do not like and start insulting the product, I really don't understand

I think so because it looks like they are going to manufacture locally eventually.

The prices are not available yet because they don't know what they are going to be yet.

Dako Power mentions a 25 year warranty on the solar panels and 10 years on the Powerwall.

Does normal deep cycle batteries last more than 5 years?

Oh...forgot - They also mention a 25 year warranty on the inverter.

Discussion forum? Differing opinions?

Doesn't seem like a discussion as much as going in and insulting.
Discussion implies an open mind and wanting to hear what others have to say. That goes out the window when you start insulting.

Did some math on the TCO for the Tesla Powerwall based on annual 5% capacity depreciation (based off the warranty).
Its a little expensive, but it does break even assuming annual increases of 8% or more during the device lifetime.

http://goingsolar.co.za/2016/02/15/tesla-powerwall-payback-math-for-south-africa/

I've included my Excel / Numbers sheets in the calculations, so you can play with the numbers.
Payback period improves dramatically in some situations - i.e. if you're using it to reduce costs at R2.13 in Cape Town > 600KWhr usage.

Looking at the numbers it seems that its quite likely to break even in real terms given historical price increases - I'd give that a certainty value of about 95%. Its also quite likely to make sense over its lifetime, but its marginal at current rand /dollar rates.

Will be interesting to revisit this in a year or two, when price/capacity changes, vs actual rates.
