Here is how your Vodacom number can be stolen for almost a week (And there is nothing you can do about it)

Thanks, what terminology exactly do I need to use to ask them to do it, what do they call this sim swop block feature?
Because from past experience most of the agents are so switched off that you'll be sent round the merry go round for half an hour before someone wakes up and finally applies themselves to work out what you need.

@Jan

I know you are busy but can we please get some investigation and analysis on this?

As my post above, my daughter almost lost her number on the weekend to this fraud and a lot others have lost their numbers for good.

A few members before me have requested your input/assistance on this thread already.

Any chance you could chip in?

Would be greatly appreciated and possibly get the networks to review and tighten their security measures around this problem.

Given this is all most likely done by means of an insider contact, I doubt the flag means anything.
Mine was done by an insider, I know this because I purchased the number from them.

After I flagged it, it's not possible for the insider to do a sim swap.

I am tempted to agree with you. This is a case of we will never know until it happens. Unfortunately, the networks have proven untrustworthy that anything is possible at this stage.

Call Vodacom on (082) 135, speak to a service consultant and request the number to be flagged for sim swop.

You will answer a few security questions, not the madness of the last 5 numbers, but things like your balance, the phone you are using, etc.

If everything checks out, they put a flag on your number so no one can sim swop it via the telephone but you will need to go to the Vodacom store to manually do the swop.
@ Dups,thank you

this would be great!
If they could also attempt sim swaps at each provider to see how thorough the systems are

Purchased?

Found a number on Gumtree. Contacted the seller and bought the number. They sim swapped the number to me on a new sim. Used for about a week then they started nonsense of not receiving payment . Sellers wife was the insider working @ a dealer store. She ported the number to a new sim on their side and demanded more money from me. I managed to go to a local store and prove that the sim is mine.

Spoke to MTN now (135 option 2 option 5) and they put me on a watch list. They give you a security question to choose from, you give a response.

Then whenever a sim swop is attempted then the agent will ask the security question and the person will need to provide the correct answer.

Is that number prepaid or contract?

Mtn sends you an sms and otp which you need to sms back to them. Only then does the porting process proceed.

Telkom sends you an sms only, if you don't respond within an hour or 2 the porting simply goes ahead.

that wouldn't work if my reason for sim swap is lost or broken phone

OTP and sms don't come to you when a store insider is doing the sim swap.
Ask me, I will tell you. Scroll up to my post. My number was on Voda Prepaid. They did the swapping daily. I kept on going to a Vodastore nearby and the insider kept overriding the instruction.
I eventually ported that number to MTN, and the clowns did the same at MTN. They had insiders swap the number at MTN as well.
This back n forth went on for about 3 weeks, until I was told to flag it. That's when it stopped.

Well, well, well.

It happened today, someone tried to swop my daughter's number. She is on Vodacom

Fortunately, she was with me and I knew that something was up. We were sitting and she was on the phone, the next thing she asks me whether I do have a signal.

I check both my personal and work numbers, and lo and behold, I have signal in both. She switched the phone off and then on again... still, "emergency calls only."

I immediately asked her to check if she did receive a message from Vodacom. Sure enough, she did.

We called Vodacom and regained her number. She ended up putting a "flag" on the number so that she has to go in to the Vodacom store for a sim swop in future instead of telephonically.

This made me request a "flag" on my number as well.

Be careful and vigilant out there boys and girls.

In fact, it is best to flag your number just to be safe

I also put the "Flag thing" onto my account cos I was getting calls claiming someone tried to do a SIM Swop/Swap, and I also won a competition and had to click a link in the sms. I called Vodacom to report it and they put a flag on it so that sim swops can only be done instore.

Peace of mind at least

Hmmm... does anyone know if Telkom has some security measure in place as MTN and Vodacom?

I also have a Telkom number and now I am concerned.

So you were looking for a specific number?

Also, use a dodgy character for something then complain about dodgy things happening!! wtf man!!
