Here is why Nvidia's new RTX 30-series graphics cards are so expensive in South Africa

South African retailers Evetech and Titan-Ice recently listed prices for the newly announced GeForce RTX 30-series graphics cards from ASUS and MSI on their websites.

Enthusiasts quickly compared the rand pricing of the RTX 3070, 3080, and 3090 from MSI and ASUS to the manufacturer suggested retail pricing that Nvidia announced when it officially unveiled the cards at the beginning of September.

While such direct comparisons using the rand-dollar spot exchange rate are fraught with pitfalls — US prices do not include sales taxes such as South Africa’s 15% VAT — MyBroadband recently compared the launch prices of Nvidia graphics cards dating back to the original Riva TNT in 1998.

With the price of decent hardware in general I might start taking cloud gaming more seriously, even with latency lol. South Africa when?

What these calculations never seem to answer is - distributors don't buy the stock at RRP. It's not like they bulk order from Amazon (I hope). So even with VAT, shipping etc. it should not be excessive above RRP.

Yet, we see this everywhere. The new Xbox works out to $24/R.
Agree. When I used to buy from suppliers, it was 10-20% cheaper than retail. So at least it should offset the whole sales tax argument. Retailers also get to claim this back from tax anyway as input VAT.

The Xbox Series X will be around R9-11K how can you think that for the same price as the Series X the RTX 3070 will now be R15-20K ??? Price bumping on purpose just to milk the hype, no one and nothing can hide that.

I can ship the damn RTX 3090 in for less than R35K
Would you expect me to be a dummy and NOT do the math and just read an article on why it's so expensive and believe that crap? No... Instead "Here's why I got it for R15K less than you and how I did not pay your extremely ridiculous self made-up markup"

From the break down below, you will see that the card will cost R10640, this includes Import Fees Deposit of $85.62 which includes VAT and import duties. I have ordered from Amazon a few times in my life and I was never had to pay anything more, that what the quote for imports

Never had such a problem, also the biggest PC hardware stores in the world don't even have pricing for the cards and here you get Evetech with their magical made up prices

Buffalo Logistics handles all the freighting from Banggood.com which I order from all the time, super quick 2 week deliveries and very cheap

According to the South African Custom regulation, from 9th Aug 2018, we need every consignee to provide us with their South African Importer's Code or South African ID number to obtain customs clearance.

If you import more than twice a year, and/or the value of any of the transactions is more that R20,000 you need to register for an importer's code. Should you wish to register for an importers code, please advise and we will send you the process and required documentation.

Kindly input your identity number in the applicable block of the link sent to you in the meantime, as this will allocate the information directly to your parcel.

Please note the page will not redirect, a popup will say “Successfully”, this means your information has been updated.

NB: If you do not meet these requirements or if you chose the tax free option when purchasing, we are still liable to furnish SARS with your ID number in order to obtain clearance.

Please see attached for documentation and application process should you wish to apply for an importers code.
