Build your own power stations. Rather Namibia and the rest of you under preforming countries than SA without electricity.

Well, funny thing is.... back in the 50's,60,s , 70, 80,s we had our own power station, in fact it was the largest privately owned power station on the Southern hemisphere. it ran on diesel. We had a tanker platform off the coast and would import our own diesel from Rotterdam and run our power station....

Then along came ESKOM , dangling the carrot, with cheap energy, our mine capitulated and a feeder line was sent over the border and we became slaves to Eskom.

Our Power station is still standing, but the generators were sold to India..... now we sit, just like you guys.... slaves to Eskom..

For what it's worth, we are the target town for the KUDU gas development, which see's the Nam gov building an 800mw Gas Fired station, this should have been built by now, but ESKOM tried to strangle the program years ago, not wanting to buy the excess power.

This power station would be enough to supply the whole of Namibia with reserve..... to export, I believe Zambia is looking at buying the excess....

How much do you pay for electrickery?

Personally, Nothing.... the entire town is a private town, owned by ANGLO, they are a bulk power buyer and then supply the residents with free power..... but Anglo owns all the infrastructure in the town....

Interesting. Mind elaborating on how this works?

Buy large piece of land. Build town on it.

Only real difference is that all the infrastructure (roads, sewage, power lines etc.) in said town has to be installed and maintained by the land owner rather than the government/municipality.

They sent out a notices in our neighbourhood saying that power will be off from 0800 until 1700

Its 1128 now and I can still log into my router :p

I just hope they didn't make a typo and that its actually going to be tomorrow!

Perhaps Anglo should consider building a solar power plant? Is that not a feasible idea with so much sun out there in your desert?

You live in Namibia and you don't have solar power? Stop moaning and become energy independent. You can't rely on anyone for electricity anymore. Solar energy is the way forward.

About two years ago a Danish company installed a test wind turbine up north along the coast, the mob turned up later and stole the batteries out of it.....

A number of inland stores are now going Solar, covering their entire roofs with panels, farmers are using solar up here a lot more than they use to .

The town of Oranjemund, was built by DeBeers to service the diamond fields in 1936. Initially a few hundred people lived here, but at it's peak we housed more than 14000.

The entire town is surrounded by an area known as The SPerrgebiedt, this area has been off limits to people for more than 100 years.

The mine provided everything for the folk here, free schooling, water, housing, lights, gas. We were all shipped off to boarding schools throughout SA, seeing as we only had a jnr school here. The company flew us four times a year to our schools and paid for everything.... we were spoilt.

The town is still restricted, but we have 4km of open beach front to fish and braai along, with about 4km of Orange River banks to camp along.

Life is comfortable here and crime is low,

Have a look here .... http://holiday.oranjemundonline.com/photo.html
