It seems EA's long-idling racing franchise isn't destined for the scrap heap at all, as the publisher has unveiled three new Need for Speed titles across several platforms. In an interview with Gamespot, EA's veep of marketing, Kevin Munro, insists that "the new brand strategy around three specific genres will keep the game fresh and players entertained." This refreshing and oh-so-entertaining trio of titles includes:

* Need for Speed: Shift (PS3, Xbox 360, PC, PSP) -- A "hardcore racing simulation" overseen by Black Box executive producer Michael Mann, and Patrick Soderlund, the co-founder of DICE and current senior vice president of EA Games Europe. External developer Slightly Mad Studios will be responsible for putting a realistic spin on the franchise.
* Need for Speed: Nitro (Wii, DS) -- As you might expect, this one will feature a "unique visual style," courtesy of EA Montreal. Nitro promises to take full advantage of the unique controls on offer for both platforms, but without sacrificing depth. According to Munro, "We do not want to fall into the trap of creating a 'Need for Speed Lite.'"
* Need for Speed: World Online (PC) -- Jointly developed by Black Box and EA Shanghai, this free-to-play online racer is set to launch in Asia this Summer, with a North American release slated for next Winter.

You can look for Shift and Nitro on North American shelves sometime during Fall 2009. We'll update as soon as we satiate our early-morning need for speed and overt drug references.

To be honest, I'm not excited

Neither am I

NFS Shift = Fail ! They tried going realistic with prostreet and look at what happened ! It failed

World Online = EPIC FAIL ! reason being is they tried that formula before with NFS Motor City Online and it didnt even last a year before they decided to pull the plug on the servers !

For NFS to Succeed They need to go back to its original formula which is Exotic Cars + Exotic Locations + Cops !

Not tuner cars with tracks that look the same (downside of the sandbox city system used from UG to Carbon!

Oh boy... I knew it was too good to be true! :(

But I do agree with Dohc-WP.

The latest NFS's give the kids in the hood ideas ;)

And insurance companies don't like that sticker "I learnt to drive in Need For Speed"

I liked NFS UG2

Well if ur a fan of Max power, speed & sound and Fast & furious, then of course u'll like it ! ;)

NFS UG and the rest that followed deviated completely from the nfs formula and thats why the series is in the gutters at the moment !

NFS used to be unique because it was the only quality racing franchise which focused purely on exotic cars and exotic locations (it was kind of like the james bond of racing games) but after blackbox took over lead development of the frachise they watered it down to just another cash in racer !

Ask yourself why is the project Gotham racing games so successful ! The answer is simple they took the original nfs formula (ie.exotic cars with arcade handling and exotic locations) and it has worked out for them !

IMO the NFS series went downhill when they introduced free roaming, my favourite titles, underground and porsche 2000, had circuits

NFS UG2 is the only one I like though.

NFS 1,2,3,4 was the best
Porsche one was boring as hell.
Undeground 1 sucked but 2 was fun.
Most Wanted was ok but kinda lost the plot.
Carbon, ProStreet & Undercover was plain junk.

Well that's my 2c....NFS 4 with Next Gen GFX plz

Porsche Unleased /Porsche 2000 was still a really impressive game even though it was boring. Hot pursuit II which followed PU was the closest to The original formula of the 1st 4 games before blackbox took over and screwed up the whole series.

Most wanted provided a glimmer of light but everything went pear shaped again afterwards.

You really want a good racing game with awesome graphics, get GRID. Only ~R80 from Kalahari.net and Take2.

Can agree with that 100%.
The only racing game of late which I actually want to play for hours on end.

I took the dive but I'm finding the game soulless, and what the hell is the best viewing angle? I'm used to using that bumber cam view but the field of vision is so narrow that all you see is bumper until you either both smash into something or you find a gap to overtake.
