So I kinda suck when it comes to large groups of people. It's cool when it's one or two people but when there's more than that - my brain just hangs up and I'm the quiet person in the group. I've also realized that instead of trying to 'adjust my brain chemistry', the best thing to do is probably to stfu and do less stfu'ing within a group of people.

So to that end I was wondering how people felt about the idea of meeting somewhere once a week and each doing a short talk (around 2 minutes) on any topic they'd like. Kinda like TED talks but any topic goes and the speakers aren't really that comfortable with public speaking :p. A group of about 10 people. Maybe even a question or two after each talk just to encourage thinking on your feet in a group scenario. If it was the same group of people for a few weeks we could have 'topic draws' or 'secret-santa topics'. Mix it up a bit. I kinda like the idea of sticking with the same group for a few weeks.

I find toastmasters a bit too formal and structured.
I find regular meetups a bit too much like every other social environment - it's easy to just be quiet again.

Figured it would be nice to have a situation where it's not this awkward 'ok now you socialize' environment, but rather one in which each person gets a chance to talk, and others get a chance to listen.

Maybe it sucks and no-one is even interested...:erm:. It's cool. Just curious to see if the idea appeals to anyone :). If you have any suggestions for other places to rope people in - I'd be glad to hear it. Was thinking about a meetup group if this approach didn't work out. Or just any other thoughts on the topic you might have / suggestions etc.

I have the same brain freeze. I'm in.

I'm also attempting full immersion socialisation, but it's hard to rope people in, it turns out.

30 people to your meet is "hard to rope people in". My god how many victims do you need!!?

I'm led to believe at least half will cancel, and I'm not counting my chickens before they hatch. Anyhow, I'm talking about the various nibbles I've had behind the scenes...

Cool :). People can also do it for whatever reasons they want obviously - maybe you just want to learn some new things...prepping a short talk is a nice way to learn a little more about something. And I'd also like to hear about things I wouldn't usually have heard about....getting a bit tired of always tuning in to podcasts and other digital mediums.

Now to track down this pooky person...

A 2 minute talk is too formal. A few beers in a nice setting does the trick. People can become best friends like that.

See the OP:

Part of the point (for me at least) is to challenge myself a little by

a.) learning about a topic and figuring out how best to present it in a casual way and,
b.) getting over that phobia of speaking in large groups of people

Social meetups are a dime a dozen and I think some people are put off them for the very fact that they struggle with the group setting. With a bit of structure it allows people to play it more like a game and experiment with how they feel, speak, think etc. in the group.

I don't want this to sound like a psych session. I'm hoping it's fun, interesting and that people get something out of it.
