HI-TEC tekkies. Bad quality.

Same story basically as others have. I wore a pair of Salomons for years. Then bought a new pair and the soles just disappeared in no time. So I bought a pair of Hi-tecs, because the hiking boots I had from them lasted forever. The new takkies ripped at the sides within a few months.
Ja ai....I give up. This happened last week. I dont run or anything with these tekkies. I will at some stage just buy shoes from Woolies or something. The pair my boyfriend bough a long time ago from Woolies did not rip or anything. Soles wore out though after 2 years or so, but they did not rip or anything like the Hi-Tec ones are doing.

You are better of buying something in the Adidas terrex range when it is on sale. Hi- tech has failed me on 3 occasions during hikes in the cederberg and fish river canyon. The only thing it is good for is garden shoes.

Agreed. Hi-Tek used to make bulletproof shoes. These days everything is made in the cheapest way possible. Certainly not a boot I'd take into a mission critical environment.

The only people I know (in CT) that still say tekkies are lighties & ou ballies.
And yes I’m aware of Tekkie Town, it’s hardly a new store/franchise.
The only people I know that call a tekkie a sneaker is American. Those in the UK and Australia call them trainers but here in South Africa we call them tekkies.

I suspect the people in CT also call a flat an apartment and a lift an elevator? Maybe the buildings in CT also do not have a ground floor?

Lol

Let’s agree to disagree there. My view stands re: Tekkie naming.

Many CT okes (in my circle at least) just use the generic shoes or trainers.

I want to start doing some hiking again but have no idea what boots to get. I can be pretty uncaring about shoes so Id like something thats decent value for money but not necessarily cheap.

I was going to just buy some hi-tec boots but this thread raised some concerns. So what would you guys recommend for bang for buck at the moment?

Hi-tech used to be my go-to brand, but alas, their quality has gone to sheet. Switched to Pitbull - as tough as its name implies.

Wont rip (you) to shreds either!

Bulldog hiking boots - and you'll never wear out the sole in your lifetime!

I've also been burnt twice now with Hitec shoes, what garbage. They make some nice looking shoes but each time I catch myself looking at them I remind myself of the the last two pairs and that kills any eagerness.

These are highly rated, locally made and they can be resoled so they should last a really long time.

The only downside, in my opinion, is that they're not the best looking shoes.

Thanks for the response I found the razorback with the wedge sole earlier and was leaning towards them. Do you think the ranger is better? The razorback looks a bit more like a hiking boot but they seem to have about the same cost.

I have a pair of Merrells, nice mid-boot, they have been pretty good so far, lots of mileage.

Crap pairs I had were K-Ways, and unfortunately a pair of Keens (albeit very comfortable and good design)

.

Where do I find these? I can find the pitbulls but not the bulldogs.
Whoa! My mistake, those were the work-boots that once got many, many years ago.

The hiking boots were Trailbusters, made by A.P. Lubbe, of Stellenbosch - unfortunately they closed down in 1999, although my boots are still looking practically brand new as I don't wear them that often!

I probably got them from BKB many years ago, when my wife still worked there.

I’d say it’s a much of much, just get the one you think looks the best, which is probably the Razorback but the wedge sole is the winner, it’s so comfortable.
