I am so chuffed! Now to convince the finance committee that I need a HDTV. :) It is about time they bring something "new" to the SA market. They've been in the satellite TV market since 1995 and it has taken them so long to to HD even.

I guess it is the price you pay when you live in a developing country, but then, I think SA is going to be the first country in Africa to get HD.

Broadcasts in 720p only ? Well that sucks ! What about 1080i at least ?

I know 1080p is out of the question anyway, but come on, SKY here in the UK and many other digital satellite companies broadcast in 1080i ( much better detail )

720p is nice, but not great ! Especially if you have a FULL HD TV.

Oh well . . . at least it's something !:)

720p vs 1080i debate

I find this explanation quite good:

Motion is different issue. If you want to see motion clearly, then live action 720p is what looks best, compared to 1080i. Here’s why: the information content of 720p is about the same as 1080i, though what it lacks in spatial resolution, it makes up for in temporal resolution (because the picture is at 1/60th of a second, not 1/30th x 2.) On 1080i, this would show as flickered or jagged edges on bright horizontal objects (like in the background of a camera pan.)

I have watched some hi-def clips on my pc (with lcd flat panel), and although 1080i has a better resolution, it is interlaced. I find if you are into action/sports type video, 720p actually performs better since there is no interlacing effects. Interlacing has always been a problem on today's progressive displays.

It is interesting to note that most lcd panels will deinterlace 1080i content to give you a progressive picture, sacrificing temporal resolution for spatial resolution anyway.

You guys must not concern yourselves to much with the technical macros and micros. 720p is way cool. It's more about the video quality of the original.

All LCD panels... However deinterlaced 1080i will be @ 25 or 30fps where 720p will be at 50/60fps.

And for ppl who don't know; 720p50 (50fps) and 1080i50 (25fps) have the same temporal resolution. ie. 50Hz

DSTV can't even do a proper job with 16:9 aspect ratio. Both Rugby and Cricket World Cups in 4:3
Now they expect us to believe they'll have a HD channel by mid 2008.
Pull the other one

A lot of these so called 200 HD channels they boast of, contain UPSAMPLED NTSC content. Add this to the poor datarates DSTV dishes out on its service - and you'll really enjoy those MPEG artefacts. :(
