High levels of uranium found in Joburg residents

Research conducted by North West University research professor Frank Winde in conjunction with scientists from Germany found high levels of uranium exposure in Johannesburg residents, according to a report in the Sunday Times.

Hair samples collected from Johannesburg residents found that exposure to dangerous chemicals and substances was a major problem in certain areas, and could be attributed to mine tailings dams, which store by-products of mining operations.

Winde found that levels of uranium in Johannesburg residents were similar to those found in European uranium miners

Im at a loss for words.

The government is so busy lining their pockets & do not care what happens to the citizens of this country.

They're saying it's in the drinking water, soil and air. We're slowly being poisoned.
Is there any produce being grown close to these mines?

I wonder if it can affect national food supply or the water supply.

So where are the actual figures in terms of the levels of uranium measured in residents? Numbers? Figures? They measured the levels. Where are the actual results?

I find it jarring that they use an image with biohazard waste drums, instead of nuclear waste drums, in the article.

The handling of mine waste is a real health risk here, sadly.

Why the government? Isn't it private companies who own / owned these mines, made big profits for their shareholders but didn't bother cleaning up after themselves?

The world is out of control in a "Professional Way", ordinary people don't stand a change so it looks more and more by the day.

Zamazamas which the government is doing nothing about.

We pay huge taxes which enable the Government to regulate and monitor the mining industry, that money is already out of you pocket every year, so your part as a citizen has been done, now you have expectations and gurantees.....

I still don't see why the taxpayer must be burduned with the responsibility of looking after these mines, that private shareholders made huge profits from. It's like I'll get super rich out of mining something and when I'm done and there's no more profit in it for me, you must pay for looking after the dump forever after, soz

Maybe, but a potential 'why' is the corporate tax, income tax, capital gains taxes, etc. paid by shareholders over the years.
