High-speed DSL now cheaper than Vumatel 10Mbps fibre

To be fair, I'd rather have a bit more expensive fibre than no fibre at all.

That R200 per month extra will still be cheaper than relocating to an Openserve area just for fibre.

Vumatel and all the other FNO's are the new Telkom... They have monopolies in the areas where they are the only FNO, so they can charge what they want as people have no option to switch to another FNO. There is zero competition.

Openserve is rolling out using their existing build infrastructure, ie their existing poles; distribution points and telephone poles, so they are able to roll out much faster and cheaper, and transfer the savings to ISP's which in turn transfer to their subscribers. Other FNO's that need to trench to roll out their fibre can not do this as their roll-out costs is much higher as they have to install their own infrastructure.

Until there are multiple FNO's in an area and there is competition this will not change.

Personally I don't care how much more expensive fibre is compared to ADSL, it's such a superior technology in every way over ADSL that I would pay whatever it took to get it. Can't believe people are getting so worked up over it that they would seriously consider going back to ADSL. Once you've tasted fibre you can never go back.

We getting worked up because we work hard for our money. Water, electricity, petrol, accommodation, etc is all going up. We getting shafted from every direction. If we can save a few hundred, it would be nice.

Enter SpaceX Starlink and this will be great to watch this "space" then with broadband offered at low latency at better value and affordability. A clear message to fibre providers - if you do not move with the times, then the times will move you (out). This happened with Telkom, Dstv, Mxit, Whatsapp, Netflix, Tesla) years ago.... it will happen again.

Will Fibre ever move in the direction of cellular networks?

i. e sharing infrastructure, like Cellc using MTN for network coverage.

Where are you guys in all the Dstv articles?

Moved on. It got boring TBH and I don't have any insight into that company since 4 years ago. Lots of DStv articles here also appear to be advertisements these days, which brings me back to questioning the reason for this Vumatel witch-hunt. In an industry in which I do have some insight now, I know it is not based on all the facts and it appears to be motivated by something else.

Fair enough, the removal of 2 packages also affected me, because I was on 20/2. I don't fully understand the reasoning there. All the financial and quality angles however, as well as the unfair comparison with OpenServe, without bringing up any negative aspects and unfair advantages, as well as lack of delivery of OpenServe... Well that is pure unadulterated sensationalism, with a hidden agenda... but what do I know.

WA on Vumatel. R 1200 p/m. Best value for me...

Very nice, but not all of us can afford that.

Plus I barely derive the full benefit of a 40Mb line since I'm the only one using it.

I'd be happy with a 20/20 service from Vuma if it was cheaper than what I'm paying now, but no chance of that in the near future.

My CPE is installed and waiting though.

I don't think it's sensationalism.

Vumatel deserves to be dragged.

You are partially correct that Vumatel can't be directly compared to Openserve, due to their relationship with Telkom.

I am with Frogfoot and you can make a direct comparison with Vumatel.

I will admit Frogfoot has the odd issue in my area but it is a rare occurrence & happens due to maintenance.

My sister has Vumatel and is frequently experiencing issues. Sometimes lasting days.

Vumatel is R100 more than Frogfoot(10/10) and Frogfoot does not charge a connection fee.

I really hope Frogfoot can expand further & challenge Vumatel.

Openserve seems to be slow with rollout.

Frogfoot is the only real competition to Vumatel.

You are basing your argument on yourself and your sister's connections. Well done. You are truly an expert and I am only partially correct. Like I said, what do I know?

WE ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT ENTRY LEVEL PRICES. 10/10 is half the price of your 1 gig line. R70 per meg on 10/10 line or R1.40 per meg on a 1gig line.
No need to shout...

Obviously Vumatel does not want to sell 10Mb fiber...there is no ROI for them at those levels. So the try and shift the market with their pricing.

If someone asks me to quote on a really kak cabling job that I do not feel like planning end executing, I just overcharge to such an extent that it is a win win for me...if they refuse I do not have to do the job and if they accept, I make much more than usual.

Well, I feel like I have to shout when I see 1 gig stats in a 10mb thread.

I'm sure they will change their tune when half 80% of the suburb (moms and pops) cancels and goes back to dsl/lte. Lets see what their ROI is when only 20% of the lines are used.

That will never happen. DSL is being fased out and where stuff is broken or stolen Openserve is not fixing it.

Re-installing GTA 5 in 30mins is awesome, once you hit speed off 200Mbps to 1Gbps you struggle with the wait to download a large file. The struggle is real

To be fair.

R1200 to you isn't the same value of money to me.

R1200 is a lot of money to me.

He has a valid point. The vast majority of people require an entry level package and Vumatel is asking for way too much.

I currently pay R657 to Afrihost for a 10mb line.

If that increases, bye bye Afrihost.

I'm not willing to pay more than R650 for a 10mb line at this point.

Somethings gotta give.

Fibre prices can't increase any further or it becomes an unattractive option, especially in SA.

Btw the price you pay on the 1Gb line is probably area specific and as you say for business purposes.

Your situation is the exception and not the norm.

Its actually sad that I am paying half your subscription fee but using an entry level 10mb line.

It just further proves that fibre is becoming too expensive.
