Hi guys

Are you also experiencing high ping times all of a sudden? My ping times were excellent for the past three weeks, but from about an hour ago it jumped between 5 and 10 fold.

Since this morning speeds in general are terrible - local and international.

I'm currently capped. and even Google is now dodgy.

I'm getting 90% plus ping losses to the UK - so much for Telkoms "slower link". Effectively it is no link.

South Africa needs World Class Broadband at World Competitive Prices.

yep. capped account just got a lot slower. I could send a letter from point a to b faster by mail than by downloading the text

Real Slow. That international side really is a waste of time. It would appear that just about everybody hits the "Big Cap" round about the twentieth of the month. Perhaps Telkom can be persauded to increase the capping to 4Gb. Considering that I made a point of not downloading anything big this month, and only used my connection for browsing and gaming, which is local, I certainly haven't exploited the International bandwidth. Come on Telkom, make a plan, this is really getting annoying.

well if everything u do is local i doubt u are affected by the cap its doesnt apply to local only overseas so download as much as u can and play local easy dude now i play overseas servers and download battlefield mods maps etc i can make it through the month without reaching my cap but the 3 days before the end of the month gaming overseas is gone to slow which is strange because i havent reached my cap

Yep, same here. Had a marvellous time over Christmas and the New Year, it was like having driving on the Freeway without any other cars around.

I expected the network to slow down when people came back from holidays, not the case, it stay pretty good. Now since the start of the month (Feb) it's as bad as it's every been.

Don't know what Telscum have done this time, probably signed up more users and reduced the bandwidth at the same time.[:D]

Looking at Sentech more closely every day.....[:)]

International ping times on ADSL are always bad. Usually so bad that using game servers overseas is not really feasible.

However making use of a VPN can help. Playing Q3 on UK servers without a VPN gives me a ping around 400-700 or worse. Using a VPN gets me about 240-280 on the same servers, but more importantly the ping rate is fairly stable, not bouncing all over the place to 999 like with direct ADSL.

The interesting part is the VPN I connect to is hooked up the SAIX network via digitnet. I still use ADSL to log into the VPN, so basically by increasing the hops, distance and amount of processing done on the connection you get better results. Which implies the high ping times are artificial since the network traffic goes back out on the same network in the end anyway. Its fairly obvious the actual ADSL link itself is not to blame so the only conclusion is that Telkom/Saix are artificially slowing the international ping rates for ADSL users - no doubt to discourage people from using apps which require low latency. Telkom have nothing to gain by slowing down game servers, but they do have motivation to make IP phone and teleconferencing unusable, since this would erode profits.

The only other explanation would be that the port shaping cloud just takes too long to inspect packets, which would be ironic since it is there to supposedly “improve” my experience..

Very interesting pookfuzz - I never thought that Telkom might be slowing international ping to prevent IP phone... hmmmm.

VPN is a primarily business service, so it makes sense that you probably getting priority bandwidth. Also, its harder traffic to inspect I suppose.

The VPN is one I set up myself, so I doubt I am getting any special treatment. Besides local latency is good, so I doubt it has anything to do with it.

The point I was trying to make was that the ADSL part of the equation is not where the latency creeps in. The latency seems to happen as soon as you go international and only seems to affect ADSL users using the international link( diginet users are fine ), which makes me believe the high ping rates are artificial.

I see that Windows traceroute is working again.

Tracing route to myadsl.co.za [196.30.15.150]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <10 ms <10 ms <10 ms 192.168.0.1
2 10 ms 20 ms 20 ms wblv-224-01.telkomadsl.co.za [165.165.224.1]
3 10 ms 20 ms 20 ms wblv-ip-er-1-fe-11-1-0.telkom-ipnet.co.za [196.4

4 31 ms 40 ms 40 ms rrba-ip-er-1-fe-3-0-1.telkom-ipnet.co.za [196.43
.10.150]
5 170 ms 181 ms 160 ms atm6-0sub1.br1.jnb6.alter.net [196.31.39.54]

8 160 ms 170 ms 171 ms feppo.webonline.biz [196.30.15.150]
