How can a non brand phone with a 5" 720 screen - with zero upgrade path - be R3,000 in 2016 ?

Given those specs in a world where the top end phones cost 6x as much, I don't see the problem. If it said Motorola or Samsung on the label instead if Hisense you probably wouldn't give it a second thought.

Because Moto and Samsung at least have a known track record of updating their phones once in a blue moon. Does Hisense? + there would be accessories + replacement parts + support available for these.

These Hisense phones doesn't even seem to exist elsewhere...

I would steer clear. Rather look to other better known, cheap Chinese brands like Xiaomi, Meizu or Huawei (probably more expensive).

The pricing of the 5.5 Elegance model is not bad, but my money would go to Xiaomi for a Redmi Note 3, again. Bigger battery and much more chance of updates.
