HOLDEN has announced it will stop making cars in Australia in 2017, throwing the future of the nation's auto industry into doubt.

General Motors broke the news to the federal, Victorian and South Australian governments early this afternoon.

The nearly 3000 Holden workers to be directly hit by the pullout were to be told this afternoon, as unions warned General Motors' decision would cost 50,000 jobs in the auto sector.

Rival carmaker Toyota also warned GM Holden's decision would put "unprecedented" pressure on its own ability to build cars in Australia.

Quite sad since in 2016 Ford Australia is stopping production of the Falcon.

Apart from loosing the Lumina / Ute it could be good news for SA since we export a lot of vehicles Down Under. Not sure if that will apply to GMSA products, perhaps they go the same way we did and start selling Chevrolet (or Holden) badged Deawoos in Oz?

If GM is dropping the Chev/Daewoo connection in Europe, the likelihood of them doing the same here is pretty high.

Or they can do what Renault does and rebrand Dacia's and sell them.
*giggle* Renault Sandero *giggle*

There's going to be an uprising in Australia!

One of the problems facing GM is how they deal with all their brands. They have Chevrolet as a global brand with various regional brands like Deawoo, Buick, Cadillac, Opel, Vauxhall and Holden. To make things more complicated these brands do not overlap and operate in different market segments (budget/mainstream/premium).

In Europe and the UK they have Chevrolet/Deawoo products competing with Opel/Vauxhall products and the market does not necessarily perceive one brand as being more premium than the other. Same thing happened here in SA when they tried to ditch Opel, now GMSA has its work cut out for it if it wants to make Opel a premium brand over Chevrolet.

The bottom line is that GM's bottom line still does not look good and they need to streamline their operations without alienating buyers.

Maybe this can help GMSA . They wanted to start exporting the Chev Ute to Aus a while ago. I liked Opel, but this move to being upmarket sucks. The newest set of Chev badges Daewoos are much better than the initial ones we got here.

Quite true, the Koreans have upped their game and Deawoo/Chevrolet is often overlooked when people are searching for good quality Korean cars.

I have a 2012 Chev Cruze 1.8 LT. I must say I'm very impressed with it even if it's a Opel, Chev or Daewoo :D

It's DAEwoo people, not Deawoo.

Sounds like the perfect role to buy a Lumina SS next year it seems. Like picking up a cheap Seat was a fantastic deal when they pulled the plug.

I assume you are referring to the Opel Corsa Bakkie when you mention the Chev UTE?
