Seriously though. What is the bottom line with caps now ?

One moment ICASA say local bandwidth musn't count towards your cap anymore.

Then Telkom say ISP's must inforce any caps.

So what is the real story then because I've lost track

I must say If I, and probably most SA internet users who complain about caps, didnt download illegal stuff or music videos id hardly ever be hitting my 3 gig cap.

I know people are going to give some stupid examples like Linux distros and streaming radio and video everyday as reasons for uncapped etc.. But these apply to very few people, and those who can complain about caps really restricting them besides in downloading from P2P or illegally are too just not catered for, and that isnt really a crime.

So anyway, what are you doing that need several accounts antowan?

It doesn't mean because people are using up their bandwidth that they are downloading illegal stuff :(

One Vista beta and it's gone.

My friend builds a couple of PC's a week. Each machine has to be 100% up to date before it's delivered to the customer. Couple of PC's per week doing Windows update x a month .... a lots of bandwidth.

Steam updates ....

Half Life 2 Episode 1 purchased online ...

You get the picture :D

dualmeister, Sounds to me he is updating each machine individually? Tell your friend to use autopatcher or some other simmilar patching program he can save lots of bandwidth that way.

Just because some abuse a network and download stuff that's illegal, doesn't mean they have to limit us. That is no reason to limit developement!

Besides if they take the cap away then everything should start getting a little cheaper. So say you get charge x amount for no cap, but you don't need so much freedom they could charge you far less for a smaller 10gb account or something similar. They have no real reason to make us trail behind other international countries in terms of broadband speed, caps and costs.

It's the equivilent of apple saying that they refuse to make an mp3 player that has a lot storage space because they fear that people will misuse this to load illegal mp3's onto the device, if they were the only company that manufactures mp3's.

The only thing that Telkom is doing is delaying developement and for what? They don't care what people use their caps for, they only care about money. The higher end users who can only have a 3gb cap WILL go out and buy another account because they probably will run out and Telkom knows this.

Besides there are a lot of ways of using more than 3gb's/month that are not illegal and do not include downloading linux distro's. Streaming video, online games, legal mp3 buying/downloading sites, legal movie selling/downloading sites and many more things that have to do with business etc just to mention a few. Why must we be limited to the amount of such things that we can do because Telkom believes that 3gb is enough for everyone?

Im not trying to say hes doing ilegal stuff, its just that the legal stuff that can burn through your cap easily, even the stuff you meantioned, isnt very common at all.

How many people build PC's and need to update them and do this through a home connection, that would normally be done at work. And gaming is also a smallish thing in terms of the amount of peopel that do it, but granted even Telkom advertising ADSL for gaming. but steam updates alone arent going to kill your cap, and most other games dont update as much.

And Vista beta are also such fringe activities... how many people wanted to downoad Vita RC1 out of all broadband users in SA?
I sound like a Telkom employee again, but you see their point, most home users actually dont need much more than 3 gigs. The rest they simply dont cater for, it makes them very rich that way...:(

like I've been saying, its simply because most people just dont do any of those things that would use much than 3 gigs a month. So if you were a company, like Apple using your example, and about 80-90% of Ipod buyers only ever used a 512MB Ipod, why would you give everyone 30gig Ipods just becasue some people need them or want them, an most of the stuf will be illegal anyway. It would lose Telkom more money to give everyone uncapped or higher cap accoutns when most people still only use their 3 gigs or so and a few download all day.

Look, I also yearn for a bigger cap, but Telkom just provide a lame home orientated ADSL service which is made for the type of people who use 3 gigs just surfing, doing some updates, some legal music downloading, email and whatever else they want that is capable with just 3 gigs.
The problem is that we have no alternative, that no other company can provide ADSL. Onc ethat barrier is overcome, and SAT-3 unbundled with the local loop, then Telkom can carry on offering this service, and many peopel will stay with it because they are too ignorant and dont actually need anything more, and all of us will move to whoever offers higher caps.

Telkom's opinion of ADSL is that it should be a replacement for those people that dial up maybe a couple times a day to look something up or check email, probably because that's all people in SA have ever been able to do.

In reality it's not cost effective for that type of use, and ADSL is meant for more.

If you have a broadband connection and find 3gig more than adequate you don't need broadband IMO. What people do with their accounts is their business and nobody has to feel required to explain why we need cheaper bandwidth in the country. Even if you download only 1Meg a month, know that you are paying 10 times more for it than people in most countries elsewhere...

To make things worse, there are peeps overseas who can use as much as they want, which effectively brings their cost per meg closer to nothing the more videos they watch, or the more online radio they listen or whatever the heck they find their connection able and willing for...

Nobody has the right to intrude your privacy by asking you what you do that requires so much. NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS! That is the right answer IMO.

The real question is, why can't we get high cap or uncapped services affordable in this country if other folks around the globe can? Are we so hapless? I refuse to believe we are! In fact I know we aren't! We are held back by a lack of competition in the market! I as the consumer have no obligation to tell anybody what I do with my broadband.

I want more! I want it cheaper! Finish and KLAAR!

Streaming porn can do that to your cap...

No porn I'm afraid. :) I somehow think I might be better off had I done the porn thing. I wasted 2 3gig accounts and nearly done with another 5 gigs of prepaid bandwidth. That is a total of 11gigs down the drain at a cost in the vicinity of R1000 on top of my line rental at Telkom... This is plunder, 3rd world style!

In Argentina you can get 5Mbps uncapped for around R400 per month. I ask you with tears in my navy blue eyes, when will our government wake the **** up! Don't give me the population density crap either! We have a much higher population density than they have!

So because he's an @ss everyone else should be. If you do not know what to use internet for , just like Telkom. as they are greedy @ssholes in themselves, then just don't use it!
