Why do applicants still need to come in person to collect their IDs and passports? There is absolutely no reason at all why these documents can't be sent by private courier to applicants. This simple change would remove a massive strain on Home Affairs offices.

Even if there was an option to have document couriered I would rather still go and collect.
So that I can check that is al correct, I do it with visas, I want to be in the office make sure its correct so I can raise any issues there and then.

Who is the minister of SITA?
It's an SOE, so ultimately Minister of Public Enterprises (previously Jamnadas, now Leon Jooste)
SITA was a decent organization back in the day - not particularly innovative, but a solid team and platforms, honest procurement systems and delivering reliable service. However, 23 CEOs later, it's a different story.

AFAIK, there is no ministry of public enterprises anymore in the GNU? So I guess its Cyril who is in charge of it. I guess he wants to keep the money close to his chest.

When you collect your document, they scan your fingerprints to make sure you are you. When I collected my ID I did that and asked about my wifes ID, which was also ready as we applied at the same time, and they said only the person whose ID it is can collect as they verify with the fingerprints.

Makes sense.

It's completely irrelevant and unnecessary though. There's no need for them to check that you are you. That's the reason there's a photo on your ID and your passport.

Because our passports are not biometric. Not to be confused with "they collected biometric data" - the passport itself is not. This makes it very lucrative for false passports as it can be easily modified. Its also the reason why so many countries are forcing ZA citizens to get visas. They need that step because our passports are easy targets.

Now let the criminals find out there's a courier running around with new passports they can use... they will be attacking them constantly.

Hopefully now with a new minister we can fast-track our passport technology by putting funds into keeping up with global passport standards instead of paying for the ministers kids to go to Redhill in a Bentley.
