Plan to declare South Africa's green ID book invalid

The Department of Home Affairs has announced plans to phase out South Africa's green ID books more than ten years after introducing the smart ID card.

E-tv news recently interviewed home affairs minister Aaron Motsoaledi, who said his department would soon announce that South Africa's old green ID books were no longer valid.

Incompetent clowns and their public servants makes it hell to do something as basic as getting a new ID. I get an anxiety attack everytime I have to go to home affairs, nevermind any of the other departments.
Unsure where you are, but I went to Waterfall to renew my drivers license card and the process (excluding paying) was 30 minutes. I was a walk in on Saturday at lunch time which made it worse.

Apparently people that book or walk in after 18.00 (they’re open until 21.00!) do it 10-15 minutes.

Whoever runs it, needs to be the head of home affairs too

@now05ster jy lag lekker nou, more huil jy as die cops jou vra of dit single ply of double ply is.
I was moaning for seriaas. And yes all the toilet paper and licenses add up :(

Why can't we have the ID for free, as part of the great SA tradition of wanting moar.

This is Zululand , not Disneyland.

I'll pay them a R1000 if it means I don't go stand in a queue or have to talk to System Is Offline clowns.
I also have a "fear" of government queues. Had to take my daughter a while ago for her first ID. Had the bad luck of standing in line for 3 hours only for loadshedding to come and they closed the place. 3 times it happened. Only the 4th attempt they got through (had my wife take her the last 2 times, **** that ****).

Adoption was held back by the slow rollout of biometric capture systems to Home Affairs branches needed for the cards.

Additionally, smart IDs are only available to people born in South Africa and not naturalised citizens.
We are ready!    (Not)

“Very soon, we will make an announcement that we will keep one, and the other (green barcode) becomes invalid.”
Hey Aaron, set the date to 31 Dec 2100 :ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:

Being vaguely reasonable for a second...

The best way for HA to handle this, would be to make sure every person who eligible for an ID document of some kind, to be able to get the ID Card and then just stop issuing ID Books.
It wouldn't make the ID Book invalid, just that you couldn't get a new one.

I think this is already the case

Main reason I haven't gone yet. I have three green ID books, all three was free back then. Why can this plastic card not be free?
Added to this, why do I need to go through the inconvenience of getting a new card that adds no value above the book I already have? What's wrong with the book and why do I need to replace it?
