1,000 new bank branches where South Africans can get smart IDs and passports

The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) aims to expand the number of bank branches where South Africans can apply for smart IDs and passports by 1,000 by the end of the 2027/28 financial year.

This is according to the department's 2025/26 financial year annual performance plan, which also said that Home Affairs plans to add 100 new eHomeAffairs-enabled bank branches by the end of the current financial year.

That's all you need to know. One day government is going to surprise us all by doing instead of talking.

As a PR, I still cannot get a replacement green ID book nor a card. Been without a book for 10 months.
Big problem coming back from Botswana recently, HA officer at Cape Town demanded to see my ID book and would not listen when I said I had tried for 10 months to get a replacement.

It took 45 mins waiting in a room while he called his team leader (so he said), and then I was told to leave. Normally my PR permit is enough, but not this time

I actually thought he was being officious on purpose, speaking to me in a loud voice

Great

And when will the idiots change the 3 fields on the SA ID card with updatable fields for PR citizens. Should be a 5 minute max database update.

They need but allow the change on Nationality - Currently RSA but can read anything
Country of Birth, same country list as above
And lastly the Status as Citizen - PR or Permanent Resident

Its not that complicated but clearly at Home Affairs its hell beyond earth.

All PR members gets an ID number when they get their Green ID book anyway.

Not rocket science.

They normally allow for a certified copy of your PR as long as it was certified at the SA Police station in the past 3 months. Thats how my spouse travels. She has a scanned copy of that and her ID on her phone. She doesnt travel with the originals. And why?

Home Affairs cant replace a simple PR document if its lost. Not at all. You have to apply for a document to say that you have a PR. Previously they would simply put a sticker in your passport saying youre a permanent resident.
