Getting rid of green ID books in South Africa

The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) would struggle to justify a deadline for the expiry of green ID books in the near future as its smart ID card issuing capacity is far too limited.

Former home affairs minister Aaron Motsoaledi has caused panic after an interview on E-tv News in which he said that the DHA would "very soon" announce that the green ID book would become invalid and be fully replaced by the newer Smart ID card.

Just as well DHA is now run by a competent minister and we can stop this whole nonsense of making ID books invalid.

TLDR, but can permanent resident get the new ID yet?
Also I am sure not long ago I read an article say the green ID will still be around for many years to come.

Another major issue is that Smart ID cards are unavailable to naturalised citizens or people with permanent residency.

This is slightly incorrect, it's also not available to South Africans citizens who are citizens by birth, but happen to have been born outside of South Africa.

At least 5 years after they are able to service all applicants. Courts won't allow anyone to be without ID.

That's descent. By birth means you were born in SA but to parents of other countries.

By birth means either in RSA or in a foreign country to atleast 1 South African parent. Before it was classified as decent if you’re born outside of SA.

Deadline should be 31-Jul-2024. I mean who still insist on using a Dom-Pas ID Book when you can just insert your Smart ID card inside your wallet!
Those who can't get one either because of logistics or because of some nonsensical rule.

Went for a passport renewal last year and the lady suggested I sommer do the ID card as well, which I did.

Anyway, no rush back then at least
