I did that same Kit, it's a munich lager right? Turned out well...

I really want to do an IPA next, think I will go for a Coopers one with some dry hop.

Jip, the munich lager one that came with the kit. Next I am going to do their IPA, and then use pacific gem hops, to dry hop it

I didn't know they had an IPA kit... Any reason for that over the Coopers? Do you have a local shop that stocks it?

For R17, what's the worst that can happen ;) (Assuming it arrives)

The thing I like about it is that I can leave the end of the cable in the HLT/Mash tun and constantly monitor the temp, instead of having to stick the thermometer in every time I want to check the temp.

Just to report back on this:
It arrived in the mail on Friday, used it in the brew on Saturday. Works really well, considering the price. Nice to not have to continuously get up to check the water temp in the HLT or boil kettle.
I got two, so next time I'll stick one in the mash tun as well to monitor the temp in there.

R17 well spent :D

Ok, well I did a quick hydro check, and the reading went from a 1080 (sorry, I accidentally added the yeast before taking a reading, sue me, its my first time) on Sunday to a 1015 today. Did a little tongue tippy test and mmmmm it tasted good, I do love a bitter beer. Now I am going to let it sit. Dont want to add anymore yeast as its already sitting at 1015

My only question is, there isn't really a "head" in the fermentor. Just the odd clump of bubbles ganging together here and there. What does this mean, should there be a "head" (krausen)? Other than that it tastes awesome. Cant wait to start bottling (unfortunately I am still new to this so will use carbonation drops)

so, pics as you asked.

1.
showfull.php
Mash tun thermo gauge
2.
showfull.php
Full sight glass - I still need to chop it down.
3.
showfull.php
Weldless fittings, drill one hole, tighten, and voila. (and copious amounts of plumbers tape and a large spanner.
4.
showfull.php
where its installed on the kettle, after I have calibrated the volumes, now to apply the vinyl stickers.

fun!

Hi Luxe,

Did you import the gauge & sight glass or is it available locally ?
... mind sharing the details?

;)

ps: pics still not displaying correctly

The head (krausen) disappears after a while, just give it some time for the CO2 to escape from the fermenter and make sure your SG is stable.

1.080 is super high did you put in TONNES of sugar or DME?

Only put in the copper tun brew enhancer English bitters and 23 litres of water as per instruction. But luckily the SG now looks normal

I think the more believable answer would be, I screwed up my original reading. But from what I tasted today, it tastes awesome with alcohol sitting at 3%. Will take another reading in 2 days

Aah 3%, yeah, that sounds more in line with what you should be getting with your first "kit" brew ;)

Hi guys
Quick question for all the guys in the know, if I want to go the brew in a bag route. What would be the best container to use to boil my wort on a gas stove (my wife gave me permission to use her gas stove). I currently only want to look at something like 21 - 22 liters (fits nicely in the fermenter then). Something perhaps with a tap?

Usually an Urn is used for mash and boil. That's what I plan to do. Makro sells them for around R1800 for 36l urn I think. You need the extra litres to fit the bag and grain in.

Bear in mind that I don't think a 36l Urn will make 21 litres, maybe less, because you have to fit all that grain in it and then boil it too, but I'm really not sure on that.
