Felt I needed to vent some frustration... I was in Brussels for a day on Monday, man those Belgian beers are incredible. So I decided to buy 12 beers, box them and bring them back to SA with me. Marked the box as fragile, and checked it in in the oversize counter. When I landed in Frankfurt for my connecting flight, the morons at the airport ignored the stickers and I stood at the carousel and saw a box of crushed Belgian beers come past. Gutted.

Wow - that sucks :(

Have you tried any others?

Nope, but I know people who have, with varying experiences.
They have all the stuff I need in once place.

I wish their prices for Cooper's stuff and Malt Extract/Dextrose was a bit cheaper though.

I will try Beerkeg maybe next time I order.

EDIT: I was actually going to order from Beerkeg last time but I needed Motueka hops, and they didn't have.

LME seems to be pricey wherever you buy it.

I generally just adjust the recipe and use DME - which generally works out to be a lot cheaper.

Try get your DME in bulk from places like Bidvest/Chipkins ( http://www.chipbake.co.za ) - Usually works out to under half the price of those at LHBS
My Dextrose (and malto-dextrin) I use to get in bulk from places like CJP Chemicals or Protea Chemicals - worked out to about a ¼ of the normal price. ;)

Thanks, I found a place that sells bulk DME but they only sell per 25kgs....

...but they do sell. I usually get 25kg from them at a time. Apparently the CT branch is waiting on a shipment as they have a few customers on back-order.

Oh :( maybe the DBN branch are just clueless.

How long can you keep DME for?

I'd imagine it would take me forever to get through 25kgs of the stuff.

With some partial mash recipes calling for up to 3Kg DME per brew, you can finish a bag within 8 brews ...
if you do 2 brews per month, that bag could be finish within 4 months

... but yeah, brewing this way is still expensive ... you can't beat brewing an AG batch with 2-row @ ±R14/kg :) (cheaper obviously if you go bulk)

I like to do SMaSH brews (3kg Pale/MO ; 2Kg DME ; 1Hop)

Yip. In my experience they have been the best. A couple of other guys also deliver online, but their range and service, to my mind has been the best

What is the general over-and-above cost for shipping on supplies for a 20l litre batch from each of these?

Hmmm, can't recall the exact for each, but I think ranges around R70 - R150 depending on weight. As a rule I try to plan out my next 4 or so brews and order accordingly. That reduces the per litre cost of shipping dramatically.

Well the past weekend, I bottled my first brew ever. Have to say, thought it would be hell, but I enjoyed it, very therapeutic. Currently I have an indian pale ale with pacific gem dry hopping in the fermenter. Will bottle this, this coming weekend. Then I am out of bottles....dang

Woohoo, my wife said she'll buy me the 45L boiler/HLT for my bday

http://www.thebeerkeg.co.za/catalog/brewery-equipment/boiler.html

And thought I'd treat myself to an immersion chiller (she threatened me with grievous bodily harm if I put anything in the bath tub) for my bday. If only vincent would repsond (well if brewing beer was my occupation, I would probably be slow in responding to mails too)

Lucky man. :D

I was gonna say try get hold of him on Skype, but I notice he is even offline there today
