Thanks for the advice, will definitely keep detailed notes. The Coopers kit really felt like making oros, so I definitely want to try step it up a bit with something more challenging.

Do you think this is suitable for an HLT?

I also did not enjoy making the kits, BIAB is much more fun and the beer is better too.
I cant quite judge the size but it should work fine.
Only issues I can think of now is:
Bag: It might be hard to keep the grainbag towards the side of the container causing the grain to stay more together and lessening the efficiency.
Cleaning: can you get your arm in there to do a proper scrub after the boil?
Cooling: You might not be able to use a immersion chiller or at the very least have to make your own or use a plate or counter flow chiller.
Bottom ring: You might need to cut some holes for the gas to work optimally(I cant see how deep the band is)

I would probably cut the container just above the handle to make life easier but the best way to find out how it works is to give it a try. The spirit of BIAB is to use what you have and make good beer.

By the way that looks like stainless steel to me are you sure they are aluminium?

Off the top of my head:

Clarens Beer Festival is taking place on the 21st of Feb.

SA On Tap will be taking place at Bright water commons in March.

Jozi craft beer fest will be happening in JHB in May.

Out of curiosity, is anybody using electric urns to brew?
Never really considered it.
Worth it, considering electricity costs?

We do electric, not with an urn, but with a geyser element in a plastic barrel. Works out reasonably cost wise, plus we have PID control, so holding our mash temps is easy.

The only thing I hate about the fermentation chiller, is the mold on the outside of the fermenter. But other than that, the SG reading of my boxing day IPA tastes awesome

Did a BIAB yesterday, the Weiss kit from The Beer Keg. Was also not too much of a mission. I only had an OG of 1.041 though (was meant to be 1.050), what effect will that have? Will it still be decent?

Its a 40 litre urn, was quite hard pulling the grain bag out the top after the brew though... I just dumped the urn into a big ice bath for cooling... worked alright but im going to make an immersion chiller, i also definitely need a bigger gas burner, what is everyone using? The bottom ring has some holes in it, it seems like they're actually ideal for brewing. And i have access to quite a few more :D

Turns out it is stainless steel, bonus! haha, my metal identifying skills leave much to be desired.

Lower OG will just mean a bit less ABV at the end of the day - your beer should still turn out awesome.

Ordered a 45l pot and chiller from Vincent on Friday - can't wait for them to arrive :D

Brewed a pale ale and named it Duff for friend's bachelor party (he's a massive Simpsons fan)

It fermented pretty hot (26C) but still came out tasting great.

Explain? ... why would you want to boil at a specific temp?

I don't even boil with a temp gauge ... when it looks like a good rolling boil, I just let it be :)
