Darth Vader Black IPA, on the saddle of Devil's Peak.
Was hoping to crack the first bottle at the top, but the weather was rubbish. Beer was good though ;)

Nice!

I'm brewing one of those bad boys tomorrow. Last partial mash before I make the jump to all grain :D

Anyone know if there is a company in SA that does custom crown caps?

Can only find in the states, and while the caps themselves are dirt cheap, the shipping is 100x more.

Just got a question, after lagering, will yeast need to be added again before bottling?

Reason I ask is the recipe I looked at says nothing about the lagering process while actually reading up on lagering says you need to pitch new yeast before bottling due to the very cold temps.

@ aci-drain, I remember from way-back that Crown Cork had a place manufacturing crown corks at Vanderbijlpark if they are still in business, I'm sure they can help you. Google don't find them though. You could also try Vincent @ http://thebeerkeg.co.za/ , or Alex @ http://www.thehomebrewshop.co.za/
If you come right please share.
As for lagering, I have read that one would pitch more of the same yeast or a different strain, but I have not yet read up on the details.
An ale is so much less hassle and we have had lagers in SA for ever and I certainly have had my share of lagers and when I've brewed all the other styles, I may try my hand at brewing a lager, for now though, I will stay with bottom fermenting yeast's.
Go for "THE CHANGE", brew an Ale!

If you are looking for crowns, go no further than Coleus Packaging. You have to buy 10 000 though :)

As for this weekend lads, I am relaunching Three Skulls with our two flagship beers, Gravedigger American Blonde Ale and Banshee Irish Red Ale.

Pop in for a pint and say hi.

Those of you with high pressure gas burners - what do you put the gas burner on when it is in use?

Also - what size gas bottle do you use?

Thanks.

Ya lagering is a hassle, but just wanted to try it out to compare with our commercial counterparts... if not much difference I will just go back to sab if i want a lager. I've brewed an ale already and my next run I'm probably going to do a Mocha Stout ( although Im not a fan at all of commercial stout, I've heard homebrewed is much better )

Where: On the concrete shelf next to the braai. A friend has used it on a wooden table, lead to burn marks and frowns from the wife.

Gas bottle: I think it's a 7kg one, I just "rent" one from EddlesGas, swop it out whenever it's empty.

@ acidrain, don't get me wrong, there are some really great tasting lagers from home brewers and from Kraft brewers.
It is just that to do it properly you have to be able to control the control the fermentation temperatures accurately and I have yet to get the equipment to get there but I'm striving towards it.

Whose going to the Southyeasters Summer festival next weekend?

On another note, anyone know how one can get involved in brewing in terms of a commercial manner, like help out at a brewery etc.

1. I shall be there. Looking forward to it.
2. Option (a) (if you have cash and time) is Woodstock Cooperative Brewery (Link1, Link2)
Option (b) would be to go chat to one of the existing breweries in town, like Devil's Peak (Salt River) or Boston (Paardeneiland).

Either way, if you're serious about your brewing, get involved with Southyeasters. There are some very connected people in the club, including the guy who runs League of Beers, the PR guy for CBC, and brewers from Devils Peak, Triggerfish, Lakeside, Honingklip, etc.

Does anyone know of any similar co-op's or shared brewing spaces in/around Gauteng? This is something I would be very interested in checking out!
