Home Wi Fi set up- Feedback

Well I promised some feed back and here it is:

I purchased 2 x Unifi LR AP through the supplier as per link, their service and is outstanding!.

Devices set to 27Db, but only getting a range of 11 meters ( 2 walls in between LR AP and devices) then have another LR AP in Lounge.
These AP's seem to work best with line of sight, and any barrier just kills the signal.

Interestingly enough, I upgraded my modem to a TP link W8970 and get about the same range from this as i do from the LR AP!

In retrospect, I would have preferred to have purchased a unit that can cover my entire house and yard, perhaps similar to the Mugg and Bean type Hot Spots, although a lot more expensive, would have been a better solution for me.

I am still open to any more ideas, as i do not mind changing my installation.

INITIAL POST

I am trying to set up a good quality wi fi network in and around my house. the premises are large +/- 45m end to end, with a separate flat around 25 meters away from the main house.

The telkom supplied modem, Duo plus gives me around 6 meters of coverage.

What equipment is suggested to get a good quality signal?

My local IT guy came in and tried to install some netgear wall plug-in repeater/extender units, but they were no good.

If anyone has some advice.....

What are you going to be doing on the network...gaming, general browsing?

6 meters sounds like very little coverage but anyway what I would suggest is to run network cabling throughout the house and then place 2 or 3 wifi access points in strategic positions, make sure they all use the same SSID and connect them all up to the main gateway via cabling. This would give you the best chance of get strong signal to all points of the house without running in to problems.

The network will be for general browsing.
As it is an old house all internal walls are cavity wall, so signal penetration is poor.
i can get cable to the one side of the house, what should i buy for the access points? also should i get a better quality modem?
Lastly, the flat will need coverage as well.

The flat, your best option is to pull an ethernet cable through with another access point. Best to lay a 25mm conduit underground for this. Well this is your cheapest option.

TP-Links are reasonably cheap and well supported here. Have a look at www.dbg.co.za

If you want a solid solution, install these 3 in the house:
UBIQUITI UNIFI ENTERPRISE AP
more if needs be.

Run a cable to the flat and install another AP there.

You don't even need three.

Buy the Long Range version and place it somewhere closest to the flat outside and you might just get away with one.

I run two of these in our offices and to this day think that one single unit centrally located would have done the job.

And I get decent signal three floors down in the Parking lot still...

looks like this is the way to go, will try the log range version.

Should i get a better modem?

Nah a modem is a modem is a modem.

What you can do is just keep the existing setup at one side of the house and then add one of these Ubiquiti's via Ethernet cable to the other extreme of the house.

Should do the job.

Food for though is to test everything BEFORE fitting permanently.

Hi There,
Run cable to the ubiquiti's as it will give you the best connectivity.
I would also run a cable to the cottage as well. That all said I can connect to my wireless 25m away through a cavity wall and the house also has a huge I beam supporting structure in the middle. Fore serious connectivity though go cable.

Regards

Tim

Thanks all, I will put cable through to each end of the house then use an ubiquiti LR at either end. last resort will be cable to flat as it will involve lifting of paving, so hope it works.

Will post results once equipment arrives and is installed.

Jeepers! What do you have in your walls? Steel mesh?

I have one of these Ubiquiti's installed on the first floor of my house and get decent coverage through 4 walls (old house).

I'm pretty sure you'll find a buyer easily for your units if you're not happy with them - they're in pretty short supply at the moment.

Surprised they didn't do the trick for you though...

Edit: Just went back to reread your reply - are you unable to run the ethernet cable so that that the Ubiquiti is closer to your devices?

Post a schematic of your house, where your router is, and where your devices are - maybe we can help figure out a better layout
