Home wifi connection problems

Hi,

I have a linksys wireless router which has my adsl modem connected to it. I seem to have problems connecting to the modem over the wireless but only on my windows 7 laptop.

The linksys router has an ip of 192.168.1.1 and the modem is 192.168.1.254.
If i go run, cmd, ipconfig.. i see that the default gateway is set to the wireless router. When i open my wireless network properties (the TCP/IPv4) it is set to 'obtain automatically..' so i then change it to a random ip and i make the gateway that of the router. After doing this it still doesn't work but then, i open it again and reset it back to obtain automatically and only then it works..

Problem is, everytime my laptop goes onto standby, hibernate, sleep and off, it reverts back to the wireless router's gateway.

Any ideas?

Whenever I set a wireless device up to give access to notebooks and phones (which tend to be more annoyingly restrictive about playing with settings (not that I want to, at all!)), I put the modem's IP as the gateway in the AP/router; also, if it's an option, DHCP forwarder. This makes the AP/router hand off all intelligence to the internet-love device and all you ever need to do on client devices is set everything to obtain automagically, with a minimum of setup hassle.

Just setup dhcp, but make sure the gateway assigned via the dhcp is that of the modem and not the router.

Another way is set your modem in pppoe bridge mode and have your linksys dial your account

It sounds like you may have two DHCP servers running. Try switching off the DHCP server on the Wireless router. (Also, you could try connect the LAN cable from the modem directly to a LAN port on the Wi-Fi router, instead of the WAN/Internet port. The LAN & Wi-Fi interfaces are usually bridged).
