I have a 2015 Honda Ballade and just got a quote for genuine front pads: R1350!. That is just pads.

I've replaced the pads twice with brands from Midas and Masterparts over the last 100'000km. The last time I pad R1K for pads & new rotors and still got change from Masterparts.

I drive mostly town, stop n start, so heavy on the brakes. What are good brands to consider? Note, Ferodo don't make brakes for my car.

Are genuine Honda pads worth it? Or should I stick to my Midas/Masterparts.

I've used both Safeline and Ferodo (currently installed) on my 2010 Honda Civic. The Safeline pads were good and still had life after 50k km. Picked them up at Naskar in Pretoria for R500 a set.

Not worth it, get any well know aftermarket brand, it really doesn't make a difference on a non performance small car.

Honda are well known for reliable cars and also well known for being very expensive on parts, have you ever had to replace anything major? Coils, CV or Clutch?

There’s no such thing as genuine Honda brake pads, nobody makes those themselves.

You’ll likely find it’s ATE or one of those and you can get the exact same thing for half the price without the branding.

But even the brand doesn’t really matter all that much in the bigger picture.

Just don’t buy the cheapest ones. Not because they don’t work but because they are likely to be super noisy.

True. 140K on the clock and not a single repair.

Go to Midas or equivalent.

Did brakes on my wife's Renault Captur today. Dealer wanted R6k for front pads and discs.

Got Ferodo for R1400 from Midas. Got them fitted at a reputable mechanic for a few beers.
Still sounds expensive for brakes on a run of the mill car, the cars are overpriced and the parts even more, may good Chinese products continue to multiply in the land.

I have a 2005 Honda.
I only use Honda genuine service parts for my car.
There are differences between aftermarket parts and genuine.

My preference is for genuine parts. But they are expensive.

I’m currently exploring buying from Hondapartsnow dot com

For brake pads, I doubt it.

Similarly, I bought for years the genuine accord wiper blades as I did not like the look of the aftermarkets ones, as I was unemployed for a bit, I tried the Bosch Aero wipers instead of the genuine Honda ones, the difference was stark. I change my wipers annually.

Genuine is the wrong word because it implies that aftermarket parts are not genuine parts, the right term is OEM parts, it is entirely possible that the aftermarket part you buy can turn out to be the OEM part for your vehicle, because vehicle manufacturers don't build parts.

I respect your preferences though and there is nothing wrong in getting your parts from where you bought you car if gives you more peace of mind. I personally don't care if it's aftermarket or OEM as long as it's a good brand.

Happy to be corrected.
I understood that OEM was what the vehicle left the factory with.

On another vehicle , toyota.
I once went to Midas to buy an airfilter. I had already purchased the genuine part from the Toyota dealer.
When I put the two air filters side by side, the difference was significant.

The Midas filter was much cheaper. But the actual filter material was thin and flaking off.
The Toyota one was firm, thick and solid.

I am aware of all the aftermarket brands. My dad used to work and manage a car spares shop. He has see it it all in his 45 years.
Some brands are reputable and produce aftermarket spares that are value for money.

OEM is the particular manufacturer the car brand decides to use at any time, it can be one or multiple, like Toyota can use Denso, Bosch and NGK for spark plugs, or just use Denso, the same spark plugs manufacturers could also be supplying Goldwagen or Midas. So the next part the dealer fits on your car will not necessarily be the same brand it came out with from the factory.

The only difference would be the quality control for the part you buy at Goldwagen and the part supplied by Toyota.

After market parts have their fair share of issues and I have also returned some parts that were not fitting properly, the spares shops also insist on samples to mitigate this issue while the dealer just wants a VIN and you get the correct part first time. It helps if you know what to look for.

Honda dealership actually suggested I rather get Bosch blades as they could not justify charging me R1K.

R200 at Midas with change, and they even fitted them.

Nothing about them sticking to the windscreen and straining the wiper motor which will leader to it's premature failure, causing you over R10k in repairs?

Honda should fire them first thing on Monday.

I think the problem with Honda pertaining to their lacklustre sales figures, expensive cars and expensive parts is that they are operating in SA but they have don't seem to have any autonomy looking how out of touch they are with the South African market.

The likes of Toyota and Volkswagen understands they local market, that's why they are doing well, Honda is being run like an elite, upmarket brand that is not too desperate for sales.

Honda pads are expensive - I went with Safeline recently on my 2006 Jazz and have been very happy.

One thing to note is that the OEM pads are a ceramic material and create less dust. They are also a little quieter than semi-metalic pads. I couldn't find any aftermarket ceramic pads for my car.

As for the make - I believe Akebono is the OEM manufacturer when it comes to most Honda brake pads. Unfortunately they are not readily available in SA.

sure somebody imports them, I mean does Honda just go and get a Container full of pads and resell them on its own?

I have tried all types of wipers on my Honda and none have come close to the ones sold by Honda (Which are a crazy price).

The problem in SA is Honda sells the complete blade, whereas overseas Honda sells just the rubber/silicone blade which is way cheaper.

I hope they work out for you, but my experience is that they won't last long.
