Is this even a contest or does the Civic take it hands down?

These pics are for example purposes only, though I don't really have any color preference, but I like color coded bumpers.

Civic

My opinion: Seems to be the most expensive of the three and by far the best looking, not sure what the upkeep costs are though, hopefully better than the C4 at least. Honda is reliable too I've heard.

Ikon

My opinion: The Ikon is the more safe choice here imo, it seems relatively cheap to maintain and I like the style of it more than I like the Figo's tbh. Also Ikons tend to be much cheaper than Civics, some selling at R80k so I wonder if it's really a fair comparison? Anyways, they look good to me.

C4

My opinion: Best looking Citroen I've seen in a long time, tbh I don't see why more people aren't driving these? I know it costs a fortune to replace something when it breaks, but it is sexy and I feel like I could drive a car that looks like this for a good 4 years.

Your thoughts?

If I had to choose right now it would be the Civic, because it has good styling and I rarely see them on the road.

Btw these pics are all taken from Gumtree.

Civic will be the most reliable and the more sensible choice.
Ikon doesn't compete with either in terms of safety.
C4 will be very comfy and, at the very least, as safe as the Civic but not as reliable.

If it were me, I'd go with a Civic

The C4 needs to have been taken care of through its life to be as reliable as the civic. I have had a peugeot since almost new and it hasn't given me any trouble. Services are on par with any other manufacturer. However, if something were to break, you would need imported parts to fix it, plus you are buying in Euro.

Just to give an idea, I can hear that my clutch release bearing is starting to get worn at about 70000km, so may need replacing by 100k. Timing belt service is due now at 6 years, which will probably cost R10k if I do it at Peugeot. This is when import cars start to become expensive.

I had an identical black C4 and still regret not having it today - one of THE most comfortable and enjoyable cars that I have ever had.

Civic are just Corollas in another dress, as far as I am concerned, and lets not even go down the Ford road!

Honda has the "name", but Citroen deserves it! :)

Definitely the civic. Mine is almost 9 years old (over 160k on the clock) and not a single non consumable part needed replacement. Ride is however a bit harsh and parts prices when things eventually break are high.

Civic. I'm biased towards Honda though. Great build quality. The fuel consumption should be pretty good and reliability is never in question.

Services at dealers can be quite expensive though but there are really good independents around. Make sure they use OEM parts and not generics for services.

Happy driving!

Icon is terrible and the C4 will cost a fortune to maintain.
Very easy choice, go for the civic.

I had a civic like that. Same colour too. Nice sporty feel. Decent consumption. Remember though that this car is is perhaps in the same class as maybe a golf 5, so it is a luxury car and thus maintenance will be on the expensive side compared to Toyota and ford's. It isn't so popular, and that may be a nice thing, but keep in mind that because of this, aftermarket parts are scarcer than the Toyota and the like. And the ones you do get are expensive too.

For example, the built in CD player was having issues, and I struggled to find somebody to fix it, or replace it with an aftermarket pirate radio (that'd work with steering controls and central display screen) . In the end, Honda wanted R10k+ for a new radio. I can assume that were it a vw or Toyota, I could have got an aftermarket system for about R3 to R5k.

I struggled to find the vehicle in scrap yards.

The other issue I had was with the front badge that is enclosed in a sealed glass like surround. The badge came loose, and just floated around in there. I didn't try and open the surround and RE attach the badge because I was afraid I'd crack the casing. I seen this happen on one other civic.

The beading around the car never looked aligned, and this irritated me.

The engine and gearbox were solid, I drove the car for over 2 years, and it had like over 200k kms.

I had a 2006 1.8. Bought in 2011 at R65k and sold in 2013 for R65k.

If you considering the honda, I'd advise you to look for one at a dealer. Get full fsh, get spare keys, make sure everything is perfect on the car. Check the bearings around the car I spoke about, check the electronic displays are all good.

Doing it again, I may have went for a golf 5 or a runx. Easier to find parts when things break, and cheaper maintenance, also easier to resell. If I'd went for the honda, I'd follow the same advice I gave you now. Maybe would have looked at the type r model. My friend had one, great fun.

Thank you! This is amazing advice. Will keep in mind. I'm thinking of getting one next year.
