They are having and EOL sale on the Ikon now, you can get them from about R135k new, on road fees included.

I had a civic like that. Same colour too. Nice sporty feel. Decent consumption. Remember though that this car is is perhaps in the same class as maybe a golf 5, so it is a luxury car and thus maintenance will be on the expensive side compared to Toyota and ford's. It isn't so popular, and that may be a nice thing, but keep in mind that because of this, aftermarket parts are scarcer than the Toyota and the like. And the ones you do get are expensive too.

For example, the built in CD player was having issues, and I struggled to find somebody to fix it, or replace it with an aftermarket pirate radio (that'd work with steering controls and central display screen) . In the end, Honda wanted R10k+ for a new radio. I can assume that were it a vw or Toyota, I could have got an aftermarket system for about R3 to R5k.

I struggled to find the vehicle in scrap yards.

The other issue I had was with the front badge that is enclosed in a sealed glass like surround. The badge came loose, and just floated around in there. I didn't try and open the surround and RE attach the badge because I was afraid I'd crack the casing. I seen this happen on one other civic.

The beading around the car never looked aligned, and this irritated me.

The engine and gearbox were solid, I drove the car for over 2 years, and it had like over 200k kms.

I had a 2006 1.8. Bought in 2011 at R65k and sold in 2013 for R65k.

If you considering the honda, I'd advise you to look for one at a dealer. Get full fsh, get spare keys, make sure everything is perfect on the car. Check the bearings around the car I spoke about, check the electronic displays are all good.

Doing it again, I may have went for a golf 5 or a runx. Easier to find parts when things break, and cheaper maintenance, also easier to resell. If I'd went for the honda, I'd follow the same advice I gave you now. Maybe would have looked at the type r model. My friend had one, great fun.

So glad to have heard your thoughts on it, good to hear from someone who owned one instead. How did you get one for R65k though holy damn. Either way your post did turn me off a little, rather to find these things out now than later though.

Wow! That's amazing, would do it if I had the cash. Rather a ikon than a vivo.
Mekor in Claremont had three left today. Funny you should mention the Vivo as a co-worker of mine is trying to replace his wive's Vivo sedan with the Ikon.

I had a pre-facelift Ikon 1.4 TDCi. Bought it with 12 000km and sold with around 37 000km.

It's a "good" car. It rides well, is reasonably comfortable, and reasonably screwed together. It does have a whiff of "made in India" around it, though.

Only problems I ever had was that I could not get the fuel consumption below 6.5l/100km and the heater matrix inside the dash started leaking radiator fluid into the passenger footwell. Luckily my own workshop was able to sort it, as it's a dash-out job. Was quoted R6000+ by an independent mechanic.

I fitted Bantam mags to it with wider Michelin tyres and it improved the ride and handling even further.

My BIL had the facelift 1.6 from new till just over 100k km. No problems to report. A friend also has a pre-facelift 1.6 from about 35k km till over 100k km now, no problems. All considered, I can recommend them.

I was a bit disappointed when I saw it only develops 74kw from it's 1.6 Duratec engine, but in that price range this seems to be the norm, especially if you look at the Polo engines. Thing is, if you want one you'll need to buy it now, they are almost gone.

Civic.

If you don't take it to the dealer won't cost any more than the Ford to run either.

Also for the guy who bought a Civic that was obviously a code 3 @ 65k it really is no wonder you would have issues with it all things considered.

Right now a new Ikon is a no brainer. Civic is nice but you get more in a Ballade. Well unless it os a Honda with just one seat, they call then "Ballade vir 'n enkeling"

Wat?

How do you get "more" exactly?

The Ballade is a lower tier almost econo box.

Im not even sure the boot is bigger in the Ballade because the Civic has a surprisingly big one as well as the cubby hole.

Even the Civic Sedan is a completely different and cheaper car.

If the Ikon is end of line, I hope it means they will bring out the Ford Figo Aspire (aka new Figos sedan version), cause I'm selling my 10 year old Ikon.
