Anybody here have experience or knowledge about this vehicle.

We are looking to get my wife a newer car and perhaps a bit bigger than her current Polo 1.9Tdi (Sedan).

I spotted the above 2009 Honda with low mileage at a good price but have no previous experience with the brand or the car.

I'm open for other suggestions as well. Our max budget is around R140k. Less would obviously be preferable.

pretty much bullet proof.. and coming from the 1.9tdi... she will appreciate the extra torque, though not much...
its a city mover not a offroader....

Drove it a few times and rather "vanilla" its does what its meant to... big interior ---- family owns this vehicle and they have had no issues. just servicing bits that the stealership charges a arm n a leg for.

Thanks.

Ja we are looking for something that she can use with the kid around town. Planning for a second one soon so the extra space will be also be nice.

Not planning on any offroading apart from the odd dirt road to wedding venues of friends and such.

I'll be watching this thread.

I'm looking to get a suv or double cab in the same price range. Had a look at the CRV and for the price, it seems like a good buy.

Have the petrol 2lt CRV. If I had the extra cash would have definitely bought the CTDi. You will not go wrong with the CRV.

Seeing that the Jazz won best small car of the year numerous times, Honda must surely be reliable and good value for money.

If we do go through with this it will be my first experience with the brand. Only have experience with VW, Toyota and Hyundai.

Our other options we liked and looked at were Fortuner and IX35. But both are quite expensive and can't find a decent one in our budget.

Fortuners is known to roll and build quality of Honda is way better than Hyundai. I test drove a 2010 i20 and the passenger interior door handle "chrome" was peeling! Never seen that in a car before.

Hondas are excellent vehicles, and the CR-V is an excellent value proposition. Definitely worth serious consideration.

I also owned a 2.0 petrol. Only thing on the diesel is the clutch - it is eye wateringly expensive.

There's a guy over at 4x4 community forum that imported the parts for the clutch for much less.

His diesel has hundred and plenty thousands of km's on and still going strong.

Do the clutches on the Honda tend to give problems? Or was it an isolated case?

The wife does experience a fair bit of traffic to the office in the morning. But only for about 10min then it is free flowing again.

We did have the Polo's clutch replaced under warranty years ago.

Any second hand car sales people on here?

How negotiable are dealerships? In your experience is it worth it to try and wiggle a better price than the one listed on a website?

Previous 2 cars were both bought from friends so I did not even have to ask for a better price. Just happened automatically. R5000 off the first time and R10'000 off the second time.

I have a a 2008 Civic iCTDi . Same engine, same clutch.

The clutch is a known weak point, having gone through 3 iterations with the last one known as the '325' being the best of the oem clutches to have. The problem is the pressure plate itself, I think. There are now alternatives available however, one of the best ones being from Competition clutch in the states.

Now having said that, my car is on 173k km on the original clutch as far as I'm aware, with no issues whatsoever, and I'm not mechanically sympathetic, also drive ~95km per day Pretoria - Midrand in heavy traffic.

Regarding the service costs, it's not what I would call overly expensive, but it's not really cheap either- most expensive service I had was a major one at ~R6k, which included new mtf fluid, brake fluid, coolant flush as well as all the standard stuff (but again, keep in mind this is for the Civic, not CRV). The Honda Zambezi branch was actually cheaper than car service city and I tend to stick with the dealership- have had zero complaints and only good things to say about their service and competence.

Thanks SykomantiS.

We've pretty much made up our mind that we'll be getting the CR-V. Just enforcing it further.

173k on original clutch is brilliant. Our two Polos both had clutches replaced way before that.

Yeah, I have no complaints at all. Some other people have had clutches that failed them rather quickly though. I just feel it's worth mentioning the bad along with the good. If you have a specific vehicle in mind, research its service history and make a special inquiry about any previous clutch issues if you can, it should come up on the system if it was done at any Honda dealership I believe.

You can research a bit more about it over at Civinfo - mainly a Civic owners site based in the UK, but as I said, same motor and clutch, so lots of info available, especially regarding the diesel clutches.

Just ask, worst they can say is no
I got 7.5% off from a big brand dealership on a used vehicle. I suspect they can often do this as we all know how pitiful the trade ins are that they offer so they have lots of room to manoeuvre

Thanks.

How did you ask? Did you ask for a better price or did you tell them that you can only afford X amount and would like it if they can get the price down to your limit?

Sorry, I am useless with these things.

I am also useless :p I think I had set a limit on my spend, told them as much and asked them if they could help me out.
